I got the "Roaming Only" thing working

I tested it, and works great. Use a registry editor, and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\InitProv\PhoneSett ing

Change the ItemCount to 3

Add a String Value called "ItemName3" with the string being "Roaming Only"

Add a DWORD called "ItemValue3" with the DWORD Data being "5" (in Decimal)

Do not enter the quotation marks in the directions above. After exiting the program, wait a minute or 2 and then shut the phone off, wait a few seconds for good measure, and turn it on again. Or soft-reset by taking the back cover off (big hassle), or use the soft-reset program floating around.

You can get a free registry editor here:

I'm confused... Why is this useful? Why would you want to roam?

When it is in automatic, while you are in a weak area on your system, in and out of service, it will keep jumping back to your own carriers weak signal whenever possible, even though the roaming carrier has excellent signal all the way through. Hence, when going through a bad area for your carrier, with this hack you can force it to stay on the good carrier until you get into an area better for your own carrier.

All Sprint plans include roaming...and I am pretty sure it is the same for all other carriers...if you go to sprint or any other carriers website...you can see that the plans include roaming (including sprints new plan)

I would check this...I "believe" the new Mobile everything plans, charge for Roaming minutes...I have a call into my rep for this, but if true, may not be a good deal for me (I travel a lot)...When I hear back, I will let you know...unless someone else knows for sure?

There's the answer to roaming charges for Sprints new plan...it says No Roaming and I also chatted with the online help and they stated that Roaming is free...you can double check for yourself to be 100% certain...

wrong as well... here:this is Sprints offical page on the new plan , notice it says NO Roaming http://anymobileanytime.sprint.com/?...P_Freedom_Plan its says "Excludes calls made to international numbers or while Roaming" right on it...

hope that helps... roaming, will use your regular minutes(the 450) for the anymobile anytime..

Who here knows how to edit a cab?

This cab has all the right registry enteries, except "ItemValue3" which is set to 3 not 5.

JackG058 09-13-2009 07:08 AM

Re: I got the "Roaming Only" thing working

Actually, roaming is included on any "Everything" plan, including the new 450 minute plan. If I have that plan, and I'm roaming and call a landline, then it counts against my 450 minutes, but I don't incur roaming charges, which are typically quite high for any carrier. So the technicality is that "any mobile to mobile" doesn't count if roaming.

Re: I got the "Roaming Only" thing working

I can't get this to work. My phone just sits at "no service" and never picks up a verizon signal. weird.

Can someone post their HKLM\Software\OEM\InitProv\PhoneSetting as well as HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\NetworkService entries please? Thanks.

EDIT: Never mind, I fixed it. :)

Does anybody have this for verizon? I know there is a better tower where I live because it always is jumping back and forth. As always any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: I got the "Roaming Only" thing working

I too tried this on Verizon's Touch Pro 2 to roam only onto Sprint and it just keeps searching for a signal when I know Sprint has signal where I am.

Re: I got the "Roaming Only" thing working

Dumb question, but where do you set this on the phone? My registry entries were already setup for 3 options and one of them was roaming only, but when I look thru Settings -> Phone I can't see where I can set it? I see 2 radio buttons that say Automatic and Verizon Only for roaming and that's it.

thanks

Re: I got the "Roaming Only" thing working

I currently use this cab for Sprint Mogul but my job has recently given me a T-Mobile TP2 and would love to to have this same feature on it. Does anyone know if there is a CAB for Tmobile TP2?
Does the 'Roaming Only" registry deal work on TMobile?

Thanks in advance
A neophite.

I only know the very sinple regedit works on Sprint. Even if it's in the same registry location on the others, perhaps the values would be different.

That is what it looked like to me. It gave me different reg values that what you had posted.

This is not applicable to a Verizon phone. Do not do it.

Here's a cab. Install and soft reset. Can someone on SPRINT test it out?

I assumed as much when I saw different reg values. Hence the reason I stopped and asked if anyone knew of one for verizon.

Thanks...this worked perfectly. I didn't need the .cab

I will give this a try at work tomorrow to see if my battery life improves. Right now I am constantly in and out of Sprint service as I hover around 1 bar at my desk.

ok so i have what may be a silly question , how is this different from going into comm manager and selecting phone and settings , then selecting roaming and hit get settings ... it then shows , sprint , auto or roaming only .. i went ins and changed it to roaming only and it went off the network and then back on with 3 bars ... seems ok to me ... please tell me if i am an idiot lol thks

My TP2 from Sprint didn't have "Roaming Only" as an option. Only Sprint and Auto. This reg edit adds the 3rd line and associated functionality.

ok so i think that the good things tweaks package installs this hack so that you can change the setting in the comm manager .. so i have it set will test tomorrow and see whats up with the battery life

Another great use for this mod. I live in a town where sprint has no 3G but Verizon does. I put it on roam and I get on verizon high speed network. Works great. Many thanks to TheBundo for this great mod =D>

Re: I got the "Roaming Only" thing working

What would be great is 1. Something for VZW and 2. A setting for signal level to jump networks. So if signal level is 1 bar it looks for roaming.

Re: I got the "Roaming Only" thing working

Be careful when you do "Roaming Only" on Sprint. Sprint might disconnect your service if you do too much roaming. See here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...hlight=roaming
