Verizon TP2/new network/Android OS

I'm new and not very tech savy in this area. But I'm trying to learn. I've researched my questions over the couple of weeks and I've spent the last 8 hours reading various forums and have read "yes you can", "no you can't" on similar questions.

Some background: I own a VZW TP2. After 8 years, I discontinued my VZW service due to a billing dispute. They say I owe them money for a replacement phone I received under my insurance plan (touch screen stopped working). I say a $500.00 bill for a replacement phone that was insured to be replaced for free....isn't free and I'm not paying it.

In basic form I want to be able to talk/text. If I could download data and have the FM radio working that would be a plus. Calling/texting internationally to friends and family would be awesome too.

1) I want to use my VZW TP2 on another network.

The VZW TP2 has a sim card and is supposed to be a "world phone" with multiple network capabilities (CDMA/GSM). What do I need to do in order to be able to use it on another network. I'm only interested in the networks that will work.

2) I want to install the android OS for this phone.

I've read about:

Flashing ROMs
Unlocking phone
Unlocking SIM card
Installing various programs
Yes this phone can work on GSM networks
No it can't work on other GSM networks
No this phone can't work on another CDMA network

What order do I have to follow in order to get to my goal.
Install android?
Unlock phone?
Find a carrier?
unlock sim card?

If I can't use this phone on another carrier, at least I can learn to unlock, hack, install, software customize - whatever they call it - a phone for future reference.

Thanks for you help in advance.

Re: Verizon TP2/new network/Android OS

will need to be unlocked both with HSPL and security (allows to flash an unlocked radio so you can use GSM with the US on either T-Mobile or AT&T; both requiring a sim from the carrier.

HSPL unlocker runs $20 and if you think the ecurity unlock runs that too (although you can call VZW and request the code from verizon by saying your headed out of the country and need the code to ensure you can use anyones GSM network abroad).....but like you said, not in good standing with verizon you will have to go the unlocker route on both.

See my signature for the HSPL unlocker. Radio unlocker can be found in the sticky threads for the Radios. Will need to flash one that is WWU (World Wide Unlocked).

For the Order of operation:
1. Unlock ROM so you can flash custom ROM.
2. Security Unlock so can flash a WWU Radio

Then read up on which Android ROM you want to Flash (there is an Android ROM that runs off the internal memory; not sure if its stable enough for everyday use yet or not).

Wirelessly posted (htc Pocket PC: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 8.12; MSIEMobile6.0) Sprint T7380)

The only points I would add to ppcfreak's advice would be:
1. Your device cannot be used on another CDMA carrier unless you do illegal things.
2. Your data/internet speeds will be slow but talk and text should work fine on GSM carriers like AT&T & T-Mobile.
3. FM radio is not gonna work.

Good Luck!

Re: Verizon TP2/new network/Android OS

I believe if you leave Verizon owing them money on the phone, they will tag it as a bad ESN and you will not be able to port it over to any other network.

Not that this is a problem for me, but even the GSM side of the phone?
