VZW visual voicemail and sense

I really dislike VVM. It is so slow on my VZW 6.1 setup. Can anyone advise how to inactivate it? Specifically in the middle of the Sense home page where I see alerts for voicemails, can I change that to dial voicemail rather than try to load the VVM app? Thanks...
