Overclocking made it MORE stable?! Am I crazy?

This is probably just a fluke and wishful thinking.

The more I played with my TP2, the more problems I'd have. At the very least I would need to soft reset every day to get my memory back, because it would boot with like 40% memory free and after a few hours be down to 20%. That's a well known issue with winmo 6.5.

When I give it a nice theme and CHT (the way winmo+manila is supposed to look and work) it was sluggish. And apps would unexpectedly close too often.

I'd also get occasional SOD. No biggie, I was gonna soft reset anyway :/

I tried overclocking with msm7 setcpuspeed. Even conservative changes (boosting to 604) caused problems, like 4-5 SOD's per day. So I got rid of it and thought "f!#@$ windows mobile".

Then, for some reason, I tried OCT 1.5 to overclock, since it allowed for finetuning you overclock in ways the other app can't. I followed slinkydoo's settings for it, in the specific OCT thread, going with 2 steps and 748 Mhz (the next step up caused issues).

Now I have it happily running all day and night and no need to reset. I could swear the memory leak is somehow better than before. Like I currently have 64% usage after having it on all day. Normally after 5 hours or so it's up to 80% and I'm starting to think about reset. Everything is snappy, and while I still can't run too much at once, I can keep 2-3 things going smoothly. They don't die when I switch between them.

The weird thing is, with these settings, I get no SOD. You're supposed to get more SOD with overclocking. Actually, I did get one (seemingly)... I pressed the power button at the top several times and the display didn't wake up. Then I slid open the keyboard and popped out the stylus, and it actually woke up. I've NEVER seen that. So I'm not sure if it was even a real SOD. Full disclosure: I did reset after, it was chugging even though it woke up. But at least I had a choice in the matter, and it did still show only 60ish percent used memory.

Anyone else found their phone is suddenly a lot less crappy after overclock?

smileyface22 09-13-2010 11:25 PM

Wirelessly posted (TP2: Opera/9.80 (Windows Mobile; WCE; Opera Mobi/WMD-50433; U; en) Presto/2.4.13 Version/10.00)

I find my phone to be much more snappier while overclocked. Its makes having CHT and such mods worthwhile. Glad you're enjoying it! :)

Same here - it's like a totally new phone. Amazing stuff.

Ditto on the better battery life. I mentioned it in another OC thread a couple of weeks back. And no more SOD. My GPS software is less "laggy". Everything is just GOOD! Does that mean something else in my life is going to turn to cr@p now?

Link to OCT 1.5 would be great. Once you have this app running does it always run automatically?

Re: Overclocking made it MORE stable?! Am I crazy?

I agree. Since OCing this summer, it seems like the phone doesn't get hanged or stuck on programs as easily which seems to contribute to stability. We should have had an upgraded CPU from the beginning.

With all the good reviews I have to give it a shot.

:pale:

And am I right in saying that You can only overclock while your plugged into a AC outlet via, usb or battery charger. Once you remove it youll get SOD and forced to HR. So you can only keep your phone in OC mode by keeping it connected or on 604MHZ.

That seems dumb...

If this is not true such as the OP mentioned in his post how do you remove your phone from the connection with a higher OC setting without having SOD?

Nope, works on battery. Attached readme file to explain everything...

I installed the OCT 1.5 on my stock 6.5 Sprint tp2, and the OCT_run does nothing. I can get into OCT_gui, and turn OC on/off, but that won't auto start when I reset.

You need to copy OCT_run from the programs folder and paste it into the windows>startup folder. Make sure to test safe clock speed beforehand.

Re: Overclocking made it MORE stable?! Am I crazy?

wow, im so glad i tried the OCT 1.5 mod today! my device is MUCH snappier & battery life is just as good if not better than without the overclock. hardest problem I had was configuring what numbers to put in. i know really nothing about the stuff so i did a search and the best i have found is: 748mhz, 2000ms interval, 4 steps, 100 load max, 0 load min, 50 jump max, 2 jump min.

i have no idea if my settings are even "correct" but my phone is working perfectly! not one SOD, zero freezes, great battery life..

Yep but remember every TP2 is different. My first TP2 could overclock and be stable at 806 and my new one only at 710. If you are having problems check out the threads for cabs.

Re: Overclocking made it MORE stable?! Am I crazy?

I just wanted to post that I overclocked my phone yesterday, just 730ish, and it has made the biggest difference in the way the phone works. I am running MightyROM and I was always having slow downs opening texts or emails and over all the phone was very frustrating to use. Now it is much more responsive and battery life is a little better. So if you are on the fence overclock and enjoy.

Thats why I ignored doing this. There is simply too much information and I dont really understand all of this stuff. I just want my TP2 a little faster.

If it works when you disconnect the USB cable from the charger why do you say

Quote:

Notes on overclocking
1) AT YOUR OWN RISK
2) Only works while connected to AC power
3) The "604MHz" OC frequency is a special one. Only with this frequency set, you can remove AC power without having a lockup. So: after you overclock and want to remove your USB cable, set it to 604MHz first! You'll see it go back to the default 528MHz a second after you remove the cable. That's something the device does, not my app.
4) Overclocking while on battery gives insta-hang.
5) "Apply at boot" is disabled as under- or overclock would hang at boot.
This leads me to believe that only 604MHZ is the only setting that works otherwise you risk the chance of you having to HR!

Is this not true? If not please explain how do I get the phone to OC above 604 Disconnect the charger and keep the setting without getting SOD.

Thanks

So, let's see.... Better performance and better (claimed up to 40% better) battery life without getting a new phone ? Hmmmm... Where do I sign ? :)

Great another thing to study up on...

OverClock Tool 1.5 is easiest to use, no SOD, and works on battery.
Msm7kCpuSpeed requires scripts to use on battery alone and avoid SOD.

Thanks oneday.

I ran OCT 1.5 and my settings are

748.8 Interval 1000
#steps 3
load max 33
Load min 15
Jump max 20
Jump min 3

When I go to 768 my phone starts to freeze. Do you think there is anything else I can try to make it run faster or a setting I should try adjusting?

To be honest Im not sure if its very noticeable other then moving through Total commander with a little more ease.

Re: Overclocking made it MORE stable?! Am I crazy?

Good to see I'm not just imagining this. I think this is how the phone is MEANT to be run with wm6.5 and the newest sense. It's like that extra processing power is being used to clean up the garbage and free up RAM that used to stay tied up. I'm STILL showing about 66% memory usage after days of running it.

It's like the memory leak is fixed and therefore everything is fixed... nothing runs slow or crashes because the memory is where it's supposed to be.

This really does make the phone 10x more usable and stable. Don't buy the stuff about needing AC power or dealing with reboot loops or crashes. Trying this mod is safe because the settings do not stick after a reboot. So you won't get locked out of your phone. You can, after using it for a while, choose to make the settings stick.

I hate to be critical but the setcpuspeed app (the one in gono's guide) just isn't as good as overclock tool. By default, it doesn't have all those mysterious settings set correctly (steps, interval, etc.) and it doesn't offer any way to change them. So while it technically runs at a higher clock speed, it seems almost doomed to cause problems.

I think the specific OCT settings thread has a great explanation of what all those settings mean, but honestly the defaults will work for most people I think. If the phone gives problems at a certain speed using those defaults, just ratchet it down a notch instead of trying to squeeze a few more Mhz out.

OCT 1.5 is probably tied with mightyrom for the single best thing I could do to my phone.

creedo I was about to ask what rom you were running. I am also running mightyrom and after about 2 weeks its gotten super sluggish. HTC Sense and HTC Messaging are just so slow. I am rebooting at least once a day.

Re: Overclocking made it MORE stable?! Am I crazy?

You are not crazy. It is much more stable. I was an early adopter and am still using the old scripts. I did have a crash recently that I had to restore from backups, but had nothing to do with OC. Almost never have to reboot.

Now with the new Opera Mini 5.1 browser, I am set for a couple years no matter what MS or Apple throws on the market.

maybe too many sms or email? same thing happened to me when I accidentally downloaded thousands of emails from my yahoo account. I've been on the same mr x rom since it's release in april. it's been working so well, I'm afraid to change it.

I dunno what might have caused mighty to slow on you, but it's been really good to me. Do what chardog said and check for too many texts and email maybe. Also do you run CHT? Changing a few settings on that sped up sense for me. I've also heard that task manager (the top right thingy you can use to kill processes) is kind of a resource hog and will slow you down.

Re: Overclocking made it MORE stable?! Am I crazy?

So, I'm just curious as to why having too many texts or e-mails causes problems? They're relatively small files, unless you've got huge attachments. Is it a Sense issue or a WM issue?

Definately agree. There are a lot bunch of variables involved. Which OC program , ROM, usage, and your phone (CPU). All of these play a role in how high you can OC. I for example can only OC to 729Mhz.( very HAPPY  ), my friends TP2 can OC well into the 800's. He regularly uses his TP2 at 806.4 all day. While mine insta-freezes at anything above 729Mhz. But even at 729Mhz, compared to 528Mhz it's a whole different TP2. I use OCT 1.5.

My setting are :

729.6
1
100
0
50
3

Looks like the HTC sense loads the whole txt msgs in the buffer, even if there're 100 pages or 1000 pages. They are not doing one page only then the next page... So it will take a very long time when you actually have a lot txt msgs.

Out of curiosity, if Sense is disabled (using just the Today screen WM6.5) does this same issue exist?

Re: Overclocking made it MORE stable?! Am I crazy?

What works best for me:
- OCT 1.5, installed to SD Card (Msm7kCpuSpeed caused nothing but grief).
- Overclocked to 768, interval 1000 with ALL other settings at 0.
- Disabled Winmo start menu and use QuickMenu (saves about 25MB of RAM)

She flies.

ctiger 09-21-2010 01:49 PM

Re: Overclocking made it MORE stable?! Am I crazy?

I can only get 748.8MHz, one step up, the phone will lockup no matter what other settings are. (at least when set to 1 step) I have to reset by push button. Just make sure not to do disable re-enable in the gui, which will store the settings, and I imagine that will have to do hard reset to get it back, I install the OCT in main memory instead of sd card, so can't pull out sd card. I should change it.
