Just a thought, but it's probably more dependent upon the device receiving the text than the device sending the text to properly interpret the symbol-grouping into a graphic emoticon. Any device can send "semicolon dash right parenthesis" but can all devices interpret and display that as

? I don't believe my TP2 can...
