[RESOLVED] Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

so i bought the AT&T LG Neon slider phone, that was gonna be used as a GoPhone meaning it's on a prepaid plan.

My dad has an extra HTC TouchPro 2 smartphone laying around, it says on the box "HTC Touch Pro 2, Global Smartphone". It was bought from verizon to be used on for his business phone, but it also says it's a global phone (meaning it can work with AT&T's GSM network instead of verizon's CDMA?)...it also has a cracked front screen but i was wondering if u could just replace it with this.

So i would need to unlock it somehow, and probably erase the company stuff off of it, it has this "iAnywhere Afaria" software as well. Then would i be able to insert my AT&T sim card out of my LG Neon into this HTC smartphone and be able to use it strictly for SMS + calling? i dont wanna waste my money on the data, but how would that work? would AT&T prepaid require me to keep a data plan or be able to disable my phone?

Im still not sure whether u can unlock the phone to be able to use the US GSM cuz i know it's global phone that can use non-GSM networks..

thanks A LOT for your help, i'd really like to make use of this phone laying around the house haha.

------RESOLVED------

So I originally had only my old GoPhone, a LG Neon with a prepaid LOCKED sim card. It is important to know that if you bought a sim card and it came with a monetary bonus, such as $50 of free airtime, that you'll need to call AT&T GoPhone support (611 from ur AT&T phone or 1800-331-0500 from any landline) to "unlock" the SIM card otherwise it won't be recognized in any SIM device.

So for future reference here's an entire overview what I did :D

  1. Originally an old Verizon HTC Touch Pro2 Smartphone that had been deactivated, I performed a hard-reset to make this phone start from scratch.
  2. Once this was performed, obviously Verizon wanted me to activate this phone, I just ignored all of that, and preceded to install a variety of programs, tinker with settings and such.
  3. Once I was ready, I went to the wonderful site made by Olipro and Cmonex, here.
  4. I bought the software via Google checkout and received the download link for the EXE software that this site will send you. I paid a total of 11.50GPB (equivalent to US$18.03) for this software.
  5. I unzipped the file, and ran the EXE. There are a total of three parts in this software that you must perform, to get your phone unlocked. STEP 1 - Flash Hard-SPL: "It will flash your device with a patched SPL. To do this, you MUST have activesync [aka Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC)] synced with the PDA, failure to properly apply Hard-SPL will result in rest of steps failing." STEP 2 - Unlock Radio: "Your device will be flashed with a specially patched radio - this will allow the phone to be unlocked - AFTER this has completed (which is of course dependent on step 1, you are ready)." STEP 3 - Run Unlocker: "This will run the unlocker on your device...it's a nice little GUI program I made, so when it pushes it to your phone, do please pay attention."
  6. So off we go...running this unlocker. Windows 7 x64 is confirmed to work so don't worry if you see a warning message.
  7. Follow the instructions, you should install a CAB file to your phone. In my case, my phone had randomly shut off before the ROM installation for Hard-SPL began, so you need to eject battery, put it back in and turn it back on, making sure WMDC is connected.
  8. Let the ROM flash, it should be pretty quick, took around 45sec for me as I had a fresh HTC (recently hard-reseted).
  9. Confirmation of successful Hard-SPL should follow, now you flash the Radio firmware which should follow the similar procedure as STEP 1.
  10. Once that's done, do STEP 3, which should be quick. A GUI program will pop up on your phone, select the first two options, and you can leave the CID key alone, then press continue and you should now have an unlocked phone!
  11. In addition to this, I also ran this flash to update the radio firmware as I didn't realize the SIM problem till later. I don't know whether it makes a difference but it certainly doesn't cause harm so you might as well do it :D.
  12. Insert the SIM card you had "unlocked" from the customer support at AT&T, or any unlocked carrier of your choice. Go to settings and set it to "GSM/UMTS Only" and Manual. Scan for your network, it should connect. Place an outgoing call, try incoming and send a few texts. All should work as is.
  13. If you're worried about the Data Charge, just for a safe precaution, install NoData to toggle any data services off.
  14. So...if you look at this thread and DON'T act like the n00b I was, you should be able to do this in like 15mins haha, not the various days I took by posting n00b question after one another.
IMPORTANT: To unlock your phone without external software via Verizon and avoid paying for the third-party software, you can call their customer service number 1(800)-711-8300, and follow the guide posted here. I'm not sure if you still would need to run Hard-SPL and upgrade the radio firmware, but Hard-SPL can be found here and the newest radio firmware is in step 11, here.

All I can say is...thanks PPC!

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

The US tp2's are not sim unlocked for US GSM network. Now if I remember correctly, there were verizon users on here that said their sim was already sim unlocked out of the box. but I stand corrected on that. If not, 2 ways to unlock sim. First is to maybe have your dad call big red to see if they'll give him the unlock code for the sim device. If not...second option, pay to get cmonex's sim unlocker posted in the CDMA upgrades section in this forum.

Once you get sim unlocked...pop in sim, change network to GSM, and you're good to go. Now for data...you'll need to manually input at&t's data settings for it to work.

btw...welcome to the forum!

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

You would need to have whomever purchased it originally contact VZW and have them get the SIM unlock code to unlock the phone. Verizon TP2s all came SIM locked, but once unlocked, can be used with any carrier. Sprint TP2s came SIM unlocked, but cannot be used with US carriers as they were locked out with the radio or something similar. If you can't get Verizon to unlock the phone for you, you can always get a code from eBay or similar for a few dollars. After that, you could do a factory reset by flashing any of the three stock ROMs that are available, or just hard resetting the phone. Insert your SIM card, and you'll likely want to use a program like NoData to disable the data connection on the phone if you don't want to pay for it, though it may not work anyway. Not sure if the data settings would be stored with the SIM card somehow or not.

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

thanks for the prompt responses!

so i would need to somehow contact anyone (if my dad's company doesn't sim-unlock the phone for him) to unlock it by himself...just to get it work on the US-GSM networks like AT&T?

also, there's no point in me pursuing all this if it ends up with me having to pay 30bucks a month for a data plan to use it, i only wanna text and call (yes ik "what is the point of owning a smartphone then?"...i just want a NICE phone :D), so would AT&T prepaid require me to put a data plan just to use it? i saw in the menu screen for "comm manager" it has this "data button that can be toggled on/off, just below the "push email" option.

thanks once again, i tried a couple of different forums, this has been the best so far.

yes...if your dad owns the phone, he needs to call big red to try and get the sim unlock code. since it's a pre-paid...it's a pay as you go deal with data as well. data will not be required. and yup, you can turn data on and off in the comm manager.

***edit***
this thread gives you instruction on how to get the code from big red and how to input code when you get it. the first post here....

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

OMY GOD thank you, u literally made my day haha. this gives me hope now i just need to find a solid guide in how to replace the digitalizer, it looks mighty confusing lol.

so the plan for now is...

  1. i'll just try give a call to verizon number 1(800)-711-8300 and hit option 2
  2. get the sim unlocked for global use just by asking for it
  3. use a hard rest (vol down, talk, end buttons while power off) to get this stupid afaria off the phone and to it's default settings...or wipe the ROMs of the data if hard reset just puts it back to what the office restored it to
  4. put my AT&T GoPhone sim card in it, check to see if it all works...calls and sms (also turn off the data usage in comm management)
  5. ...if that works i'll be crazy happy and then will see how to fix the digitalizer since the crack is quite big

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

yeah just follow the instructions on that post. what happened to your screen/digitizer? also...you don't need to do the combo button for a hard reset. you can do hard reset in the settings screen.

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

haha ask my dad, as i said this is his old business phone that he replaced with the droid followed by the droid x.

apparently he said he left it out on his mercedes' dashboard, and when he came back it was cracked but he has also dropped it from his pocket to the carpeted floor of the car..so i really doubt it was the drop. might've been the hot sun that cracked the screen, it gets up to 100F down here in charleston, SC haha.

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

have you tried to take it to verizon and see how much they will charge you for them to replace to digitizer? although it is cheaper if you buy it aftermarket and try to do it yourself.

haha exactly, just having the HTC touch pro2's divine keyboard (+touchscreen) is enough of a reason to use it over my current LG neon. i'll fill you guys in on how all this works out this weekend :D

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

so i followed this...

Quote:

1. if u have tf3d on tap start>settings> All setting(soft key)> personal> Security
and it already said "sim card unlocked". im gonna just try put my sim card in this phone now and make a call :D

smitty7002 07-29-2010 07:38 PM

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

hmm....when i try to switch to GSM/UMTS only, it says simcard missing? i inserted my at&t gophone sim card in it...

edit: nvm about the msg above it, that was when i turned on the HTC with the "global" sim card inserted. now i put my gophone sim card, turned it off and back on...and i checked and NOW it requires a sim unlock code. is this what im trying to get from verizon when i call 1800-711-8300? i tried using HTC but obviously this phone has been deactivated...can i use any phone to call em and get this code or only from the HTC (will probably need to ask my dad's company to do it then..)?

thanks a lot for the responses!

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

You can also spend $20 to get it hspl-unlocked and sim unlocked by going here:
http://rhodiumw.htc-unlocks.com/

just make sure you follow the directions to a T,

Some people have trouble with it working but I never have, and I have done both sim and hspl unlocking multiple times.

that's also an interesting option, so do i insert my AT&T gophone simcard and use the the code found under my battery on the site...they'll send me the code?

i'll try this if the other way of calling verizon doesn't work, thanks for opening up my possibilities :D

so can i call the verizon support via my landline and request an unlock code thru customer support? i checked underneath the battery for the code as dialing #06# didnt work from the HTC (as i said, the phone is deactivated)...

i have two codes under the battery. there's:
MEID HEX: A_0_0007B_75_6 (14 alpha-numerical)
MEID DEC: 2_0113_78_11_299_0 (18 digits)

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

You probably don’t want to be broadcasting those numbers all over the intertubes......
The link will lead you to a download of the unlocker software developed by cmonex and olipro. It will allow you to run the program on you computer, connect throuh active sync, and unlock the spl to flash custom roms developed by the numerous fabulous chefs around these and other parts.
the sim unlock process is similar.

Check in the TP2 upgrades section in the stickies at the top of the TP2 forums...

READ READ READ READ absolutely everything if you are unfamiliar with flashing ppcs. You can totally mess up your device if you don't. Understand exactly what you are doing before you jump into this boat. No one around here will take responsibility if you brick your phone. Just follow the instructions to the letter and you should be fine.

that's why i replaced some of the letters/numbers with "_" haha. i'll look in about flashing software, i dont really wanna do all of this if i only need to call em up haha. but no harm in looking into it.

..umm ok so where is this IMEI number? i cant find it, those two didnt work on cmonex's site...and i obviously can't call #06#...should i just go to customer care and ask for this "IMEI number" and after that the sim unlock code (it's universal for any sim rite? it just makes the phone unlocked). if i dont get the sim unlock code i should then use cmonex's website.

i looked up all these rom flashes, is that all necessary? like the one featured here, i would need to do this after SIM unlock just so i can use the US-GSM carriers?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?p=4850772

once again, sorry for all the questions this im a big PPC noob that's y i joined to get educated :)

edit: nvm found the IMEI number, gonna give verizon a call in the mornnig from my landline, try get that sim unlock code, if that doesn't work...gonna pay the website hopefully that works. after that do i need to still flash any software to get my at&t gophone sim card worknig in it?

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

You should be able to call that number even though the phone is deactivated. It shouldn't require any service to go through as it just opens up a program.

wesscoggin 07-30-2010 12:39 AM

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

LOL didn't even see that you had redacted those nmbers.... i was looking at it on my phone.
I hope VZW does it for you, but without it being on a phone line they probably wont. Some of the requirement that are in place for the techs to give you the number are that it has to be active on an account that has been open at least six months, not have had another sim unlocked within the past ten months, and be current on your bill. But you never know, they might just surprise you.

when i try call it it says "we are currently unable to authenticate your phone, please try call again later or dial #8899"...something along those lines lol

and yea i'll try tomorrow morning nearly time to sleep, im just trying to figure everything out rite now. even if they dont give me the code i dont mind spending 11GPB to get the code from that site, as long as i have a solid chance of it working :p

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

it's not as simple as getting a code from that site like it would be from verizon. It's a program you run on your pc like the hspl unlocker that unlocks your sim. If you do go that route you'll see what I am talking about.

Another alternative might be to have your pop activate the phone for an hour or so and call verizon while it's active on the accout.

o so that's what all those radio firmwares were for, ONLY if you choose to go via ccmonex's route of unlocking. that's y im hoping i can do it directly from verizon, that would be the easiest way but now i will need to see how i can activate the phone, cant i just call customer service or does the call need to be placed from the HTC?

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

i just called them, i asked for a sim code and gave them the old number/my dad's name...it didnt work. they asked for the person of interest, im guessing i'll need to ask my dad's company to call them up.

if that doesn't work, is the plan for cmonex's route of unlocking this...

1. buy the code from http://rhodiumw.htc-unlocks.com/
2. apparently it will send the "software to my email account", i'll use that
3. download the radio firmware named "1. 2.32.00WU (Sprint stock edited)" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?p=4850772
4. i should install all of the software required after ive hard resetted and removed afaria?
5. insert gophone sim card and im good to go?

bump for what? did you try the unlocker or what? there is a whole thread dedicated to it. why do we need to hold your hand through this? did you go to the unlocker thread? did you read some of it? id suggest starting at the first page and stopping when you feel comfortable just doing it. just go to the site. you pay, it pops up. follow instructions. its as easy as that...

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

as i said, im a really big noob for this stuff, ive lived in china before i moved to america and all we did was load up the phones prepaid then...use it. i just dont wanna go break a phone that isn't even mine (it was bought from the company and i dont know yet if they want it back after my dad's term is done in america, which will be in 2013).

so i just wanna make sure im following the right instructions. i asked my dad, he says he cant just go ask the ppl who bought the phone to call verizon so i guess i'll have to go via cmonex's route.

ik ppl like me can be annoying, im also a fairly active user on notebookreviews.com and i always see ppl just like me but that's how it is, you can always ignore the person if u dont wanna help but it means a big deal to the person who is asking a question if it's answered.

all im asking for before i continue, is that are these the correct steps i should precede with? as mentioned before, i dont wanna ruin a $400 phone cuz i assumed something and it turned out to be wrong.

Quote:

1. start by hard-resetting, to remove the afaria software and give a clean install to the windows mobile PPC.
2. buy the code from http://rhodiumw.htc-unlocks.com/
3. apparently it will send the "software to my email account", i'll use that
4. download and flash the radio firmware named "1. 2.32.00WU (Sprint stock edited)" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?p=4850772
5. after everything is installed/flashed etc., insert the gophone sim, configure my settings into "GSM-network only" with AT&T, and i should be good to go?
the reason i ask so many questions is cuz i get baffled by all the threads i see, i see this "Hard-SPL" thread and the thread from step 4, i still dont know whether i need either, both or neither of these. ur help is greatly appreciated tho.

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

well all i need is a confirmation, are those the correct steps above? i already removed the afaria software, so that's outta the way and i think the whole "data service" problem wont be a hassle as i installed NoData.

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

ok, so the transaction is pending but i looked into the HSPL unlocker, which if i have it correct, is needed to use customs ROM files.

so my ROM version is 3.03.605.3 and i guess i want to upgrade to the latest version if possible, which i would still need to go find :D

im going to go install the HSPL unlocker program on my phone, should i do this AFTER ive done the radio flash (which i would do after the sim unlock..)? or can i just do it right now while waiting for the sim-unlock code to arrive?

you dont need to flash a different radio. thats for sprint and uscc tp2's.

also this is unrelated but...does weather update via wifi? cuz i already did nodata yet i can still update so im assuming it does (the city i set added does it but "my location" doesn't update)..and is there any way to get facebook for windows mobile to work via wifi? i cant even login and i dont see the settings :(

so should i flash HSPL before unlocking the phone and IF i even need to use the radio firmware flash? im kinda eager cuz by tomorrow i should get the code and get everything working :D

also this is unrelated but...does weather update via wifi? cuz i already did nodata yet i can still update so im assuming it does (the city i set added does it but "my location" doesn't update)..and is there any way to get facebook for windows mobile to work via wifi? i cant even login and i dont see the settings :(

you only need to hardspl unlock if you want to flash custom roms. you dont need a different radio or an unlocked radio. all you need to do is enter the sim unlock code. yes, you can update weather on wifi... you just have to pick your city first.

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

im running the unlocker rite now and im kind scared, the first two steps have shown errors yet it says "Radio complete" etc, i dont know whether it's actually being done. when the radio was being flashed (step 2) i got a message, "USB has been disconnected" (i didnt disconnect anything) and i pressed "exit" as that was the only option. then it said it's radio flash is complete.

now it's been 3mins into the third step of running the unlocker, still says "communicating with device".

i followed all steps, i put the global sim card in, set it to GSM only. pressed each step one by one in sucession...has something gone wrong? all that's on my screen is colored lines, and a USB sign at hte bottom while the top contains a bunch of stuff like "RHOD500 32M SS-BC...SPL-0.70.0000...MicroP(LED) 0x0A" etc

all you need to do is the sim unlocker. i told you that in my last post. is that what you did?
your phone is in bootloader mode. just hit the reset button and it should reboot.

when i downloaded the program, i followed each step as indicated.

STEP 1: It will flash your device with patched SPL
STEP 2: Your device will be flashed with a specially patched radio
STEP 3: This will run the unlocker on your phone

i just got the msg "==Success, Running Unlock==" but im still not sure if anything even happened :( on my phone i got a message "LOCKED, Radio Cannot Unlock"..but the program says it was a success...

i still checked the security section in Personal settings and it still says it needs a code...

should i just run the unlocker again?

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

well i just repeated the unlocker, this time i took out the "global sim card" and put my gophone simcard. it's now on step 2 of unlocking the radio, (step 1 seemed to fail i believe) and the bootloader screen disappeared and this percentage bar is here. before it the thing just disconnected. i really hope this works.

EDIT: nvm the percentage bar failed, i really need to run the HSPL successfully, which it has already failed twice. any reasons y it keeps on failing?

here's a bit of info...
-phone has been hard-reset to remove the office junk
- the "phone part" hasn't been activated from verizon, so if i try dial a number it says "u need to activate phone first"
- im running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium with Windows Mobile Device Center

here's the screen i always get stuck on, each of the 3 times ive tried...

also if this matters...64-bit OS.

it seems everytime i try to run HSPL it turns off the device?

Re: Using a HTC Touch Pro2 on AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) Network?

well..i asked them to remote unlock it for me, as im having a great deal of trouble :\ i hope they reply back promptly, i really wanna see if this will work.

also, does it matter if i put in my AT&T GoPhone simcard or the Global Sim card? cuz when i put the GoPhone one, it doesn't let me select "GSM only network" (as if it doesn't recognize the sim card) while the global one does.
