Exchange-like contact synchronization without exchange?

Is there a mail service that allows you to manage via outlook (imap i suppose) that will also sync with the phone contacts?

I want to add a contact to either outlook client or phone and have it wirelessly synch both ways, without exchange server.

Unless you know a free exchange server?
