This is the sorta stuff that scares me.

So I was looking again at Mighty Rom as a starting point, and I read this:

"
However, carrier cabs are recommended for the full Windows Phone experience, as well as carrier enhanced functionalities."

No clue what it is trying to tell me. What's a "carrier cab" and where do I get one?

:-/

If you extract a sprint based ROM, it will have that included already. MightyROM now includes carrier provisioning on install. There also might be the provisioning cab you need floating around here somewhere, just search "______ Provisioning" where the blank is your carrier.

He could also be talking about the sprint TV, NFL TV and all that stuff that is carrier dependent.

when I post up the ROM for you, it will already be provisioned. with the custom ROMS, to make them work for each carrier, there is a provisioning cab that needs to run after flash for the phone to work. Most of the ROMs have that cab built in where you just pick your carrier on first start up and it will do the rest.

So I've looked through pages and pages of ROMS now...and have one big question, and it's going to sound stupid.

Why does everyone like the HTC Sense (or TouchFlo3d, for that matter) interface?

Does it provide something that I don't know about? OTHER than eye-candy (and yes, I can appreciate looking at something pretty, but I'm talking usability here)?

Seriously, I used it for a few weeks when I first got my TP, then turned it off, as it seemed wholly unnecessary. If anything, it added a layer of obscurity, hiding the stuff I really wanted to do. Or at least seemed to. Does anyone else feel this way?

So what does Sense/TF3d do that everyone needs/wants it so badly?

Or, conversely, what am I missing by not wanting it? (other than eye candy)

A lot of the smartphones these days are media oriented. This brings some of that media functionality to the normal business aspect of WinMo. It is nice to be able to slide to different tabs which contain everything you normally use, and as such I think that ease of access is something many people like. It is extremely easy to access emails, txt and phone calls via contact cards and some small features that can be useful.

If anything I think people are just comfortable using sense because it comes on the phone and is something they have used since they got it day 1. It is all personal preference and there is no real reason why people like sense (although with CHT and Sense 2.5 it is really functional, if only our phone could handle it).

Can you expand on this? What types of media functionality? Do you mean like watching SprintTV? is there something specific built into sense that does this particularly well?

In 6.1, it appeared to me that TF3d did little more than provide a "skin" for WMP, didn't expand any functionality or anything, it was still the lousy WMP at the core...? So I didn't bother to even try it out in 6.5, especially since PocketPlayer does fill my needs, but maybe what's in Sense would be better than PP? :???:

The only thing I can think of that I'd like to use my phone for re: media would be as a remote control (ie. for mediamonkey, xbmc, stuff like that), and even that would only be occasionally.

Since I don't use my phone for email (well, I do, but I just view it via google ap over opera and don't bother downloading anything to my phone), maybe that's why I'm not interested? I just put a link to SMS on my Today screen in WinMo and I'm done...although I use Google Voice, so I organize my messages from a pc and just delete anything that comes to my phone after I've read it.

I don't know...just trying to understand...it just feels to me that sense is an extra layer of complexity that I've sort of written off as useless...But since so many people want it, there's got to be something there....

It is not that the media functionality is gone without sense, but the feel of it being a media phone is. It doesn't do anything better than WM, it just skins everything WM to make it more touch friendly and "easier" to navigate (which the latter is personal opinion). Most of the media phones today try to put the most basic functions in an easy to access interface from 1 screen, sense is trying to emulate this by giving us different screens with highly used functions of the phone. WM7 seems to be further going down this path and is including more touch friendly UI.

Use Mightyrom very stable and it doesnt have sprint tv or nfl and most of the junk that i personally dont find useful that sprint loves to add

with some versions of windows you have to be logged in as an administrator, turn off antivirus, turn off firewalls so it can do what it needs to.
best thing you can do is contact them and see if they can reset it for you so you can try again.

Hmm. I am an admin and don't have a firewall running.

Fun fun. I guess I'll shoot them an email...

wait, do you have to actually be SYNCED to your computer? I'm just on Activesync as a guest... don't want to screw up my exchange settings too bad (not that I couldn't just wipe and set them up again)

I never setup active sync on my computer (I don't think), since I don't use exchange. just needed it to connect. It works alot like the ROM updates, uses a program to unlock the phone.

I don't know why it gives people problems, guess I got lucky. you can try on a different computer (preferably a different ip address).
