Anyone's HARDWARE kb not function ONLY in the manila text box?

So my keyboard works fine, except in the place where I really need it. I'm working with Deck's most recent R12 (Sprint) Manila 2.5, and when I'm in the messaging tab in someone contact card with the cursor in the text field, the function lights on the keyboard won't even light up. BUT, here's where it gets weird, if I select out of the text field (no cursor in there anymore) they work fine, signaling to me the keyboard is working. Has anyone seen this before/do you have a fix? Soft resets every time I want to send a text are no fun... Thanks in advance!

EDIT: This has happened to me on many other ROMs, hence it being here, rather than Deck's thread. Thanks!
