Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
Like most of the others who posted here SERO. I am not in the United States too much these days and a plan which costs less than $40 with insurance is just too good a deal to give up.
|
Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
SERO is my reason. Hopefully Sprint will let us upgrade to something this year. Android looks good but I am holding out for development since it seems that Android might run on any device soon. Can't wait for it to be ported to WP7 :)
|
Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
SERO and no "Droid" from Sprint. Hero seems too vanilla.
I hope to squeak out the last 2 years on SERO with TP2 (my wife too). Not to mention Tethering. Buddy has Droid but can't VPN over Tethering. Lot's of stuff a good WinMO phone does that we take for granted. |

Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
There's a lot of misinformation going around here regarding Android.
Look, I've been one of the biggest WinMo advocates on earth for the last decade. I've bought everything from my Q, Ozone, TP1, TP2, etc all on release day with overnight shipping. Then, I made the mistake of loading the Android port onto my TP2 and realized something amazing - the hacked version of Android was a more usable and functional experience than my MightyRom'd TP2! It was faster, HANDS DOWN. As in not even close. It responds instantly, even without 3d acceleration enabled. Believe it or not, the back button actually is instant! When I hit the "end key", calls ended instantly - not 10 seconds later. When I accidentally dialed someone and then tried to hit the end key quickly so as not to bother them, the call didn't keep ringing anyway and finally hang up 10 seconds later, followed by a hard lock of the phone. Amazingly, it actually hung up the phone instantly! When I flip open the keyboard, the screen instantly rotates - it doesn't half rotate, garble the image on the screen, have the soft keyboard pop up blocking the screen, and then bring up a menu when I try to close the soft keyboard (followed by a soft lock requiring a 4 minute CleanRam level 3 procedure). I can send a text and instantly close the keyboard, as opposed to waiting 5 seconds, without the phone hard locking! All this on a HACKED version of Android! Many of you bitch about the "tweaking aspect" of Windows Mobile. I've got news for you - the only reason we tweaked it is because quite frankly, in stock form it blows. Artists like MightyMike have made the device leaps and bounds better than they are, but the crux of the matter is that if Windows Mobile was any good to begin with they wouldn't need to do anything. How illogical are these things which require regedits to fix? 1. There is no dedicated button to return to the home tab at any time. 2. There is no way to get to your contacts from the home screen with one press of the button 3. There is no way to separate video from pictures in HTC Album 4. The photo album and video player don't recognize subfolders 5. There is no "ignore folder" or "add a folder" functions of the video player - you have to regedit to prevent it from pulling pictures from ****ing Program Files! 6. There is no way to rearrange start menu icons in one click. Is click and drag such a difficult concept to grasp microsoft? Instead, you have to have either a separate freaking app, or do it via file manager and registry hacks. I could go on all day. You might have fun applying registry tweaks and that's great (I do too, to a certain extent), but a tweak is supposed to be that - something minor that improves your experience with the device. What Mightyrom and other chefs have had to do is to FIX a FUNDAMENTALLY BROKEN system, and that's a completely different situation. To those of you claiming no activesync support, that's simply not true. My Incredible has full exchange support including remote administrative procedures and security. HTC Sync enables full outlook integration as well. Here's the bottom line - Android not only "just works", but it works to the point where it has more functionality and capability than Windows Mobile. And this will only increase as developers jump ship. Don't believe me? There's not even a decent frigging Bank of America app for windows mobile! The facebook app SUCKS compared to Android's! These are basic apps! The beauty of android is that power users get 99% of the control that windows mobile users do via root - it's quite literally linux, so the possibilities are endless. And I don't know where the idea that you "don't get file system access" - I sure as hell can (Astro file manager is even superior to Rescoe Explorer). Hell, they're even working on aircrackng for it! Windows mobile was great because it offered features that other operating system's didn't have. We put up with the quirks because of this. Now that Android offers all of the functionality of windows mobile, PLUS it ACTUALLY WORKS AS A COMMUNICATION DEVICE, we don't have to choose anymore! We get the best of both worlds. At first I resisted Android because of my deep seeded loyalty to WinMo and my aversion to anything that's not - primarily apple. I'd also heard many of the myths that some of the same people in this thread are perpetuating. Then, I realized something - I loved windows mobile because it was the Anti-Apple - totally open, could customize, install any apps, etc. IT was like a computer in my pocket. My realization was this though - Android is no different! In many ways, it's the "new" windows mobile, with the only difference being that it actually works, so it's gaining popularity. The only remaining argument against android is if you want to use windows mobile just to "be different". To that I respond, be my guest - you can drive your old geo metro all day long. Not many of those left on the road, after all. Me? I'll take the BMW every time. Really, Android is a no brainer. |

Thank you so much for that! My first winmo phone was Touch Pro, and I now have the TP2. I so enjoyed teh customization of winmo and touchflo...even tried my hand at my own theme once. I have yet to find anyone anywhere with as a convincing argument to switch than that there! I am excited for the Evo and was switching regardless...screen size is enough for me to jump ship alone. BUt I will admit i was worried about Android and if I would like it. Now, I have faith I will. Cause I so far do not like Win7 at all. Thanks again!:headbang: |
Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
Agree... what I don't get is why I can't activate my SERO plan on an Android phone. with all the android hacking/rooting... shouldn't someone have figured this one out by now?

Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
Need Windows mobile for Slingplayer and the free Sirius radio app. Also have an old free and clear plan 750, 500 txts, unlim data - $40/month

Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
i just got my touch pro 2 in december. was thinking about getting a hero instead but i decided to go with the touch pro 2. now with evo coming out i will make that change...

Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
I was thinking about this and if android is so great, why do they have to hack it like windows mobile? Hmmmm. Shouldnt it be good to go out of the box? Root or not to root?

Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
Wow what if that was the truth. I still have never flashed a custom rom and my phone turns on and I can make calls and surf the net and watch movies and send texts and..... My phone works for me. I will continue to be a Pocket PC :p . (didnt mean to rhyme)
|
Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
I'm waiting for a fully functional ROM I can flash so I can make the switch. I'm not interested in running Android off of my SD Card.

Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
I dumped the TP2 after about 4-5 months of use and also playing around with the Android Development which seems to have lost ALOT of momentum. I chose to use a Moment as my device. It smokes a TP2 pretty good. There are no bs cab fixes. The thing just works right out of the box. Oh and I cannot say enough about Marketplace for Android... WOW ... You could spend a whole weekend testing out FREE apps that work.

The only reason I have not switched is that I am not at a point in my contract where I can get an upgrade for less than full retail.
|
Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
Waiting for my contract to expire and to move off of SERO and for the EVO to come out. Other than that I am extremely excited to get on Android

Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
playing with the tp2 port convinced me enough to move to android haha. just got the incredible today, and it is amazing. i am overwhelmed though since i am entirely new to android, but it was worth it. soon enough i'll know it better than i did winmo. when you get the chance switch, its so much better than winmo...however i have high hopes for wp7. but android will be a nice filler until that gets ironed out
|
Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
i've been using android on the tp2 as my primary OS for more than a week (i reboot to wm6.5 every night so galarm can wake me up in the morning), its stable enough with the new release that i can email, take calls, text, internet, and use most of the apps without it crashing. sure there are some things that don't work and probably won't ever work but i will have to stick with using the port till I can get an extension discount from sprint in 2012....sigh. partially working android is better than no android at all.
|
Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
Will be making the jump as soon as the Incredible can be flashed to MetroPCS. I would have stuck around, but winmo development hit zero as soon as that "I wanna be a 1st-gen iPhone" Winphonewhateverthehelltheycallit. No, if I'd wanted an iPhone, I'd have bought one, and riding out a dead platform is just depressing.

I went custom because of 6.5.x. Liked the buttons on the bottom. And I would challenge any android phone with similar specs to my touchpro2 to a speed test and see what is faster. |

Think again. As austin said, if the Touch can have a ROM, the superior TP2 should have one too.

Using the semi functioning android port on my touch pro 2 convinced me enough to switch when the Evo is released. I don't care that Google will track me and use my personal info against me in one form or another, they have a good system with solid apps that are useful to me. |

Slingplayer Android app is supposed be released this summer also.

Interesting summary on MS's week:
1) HP buys Palm for WebOS 2) HP pulls plug on Win7 based tablet 3) MS supposedly end their pet tablet project 4) iPad, iPad, iPad 5) Android keeps coming 6) Win7 is months away |
Re: why have you not switch to andriod? curious...
I plan on getting the Evo and seeing for myself. I feel like mot people on this site are sticking with Winmo because thats all they know and love and its that simple. They don't want to accept the possibility that the grass may be greener on the other side and thats fine. Everyone has some person, or thing that can do no wrong in their eyes. I'm like that with Kevin Garnett. lol. Yeah his skills are diminishing, and he's becoming a bigger jerk than he's ever been, but I can still give you 10 reasons why he's better than the rest.
I don't have a deep-rooted connection to Winmo, its just an OS on a phone, so I'm more than willing to try something new. |
