I need tips on how to cook up a Custom Rom

I downloaded Silence 12 kitchen and would like any tips, pointers, or advice, so I can cook my first ROM. I want to keep it very basic. My made reason for cooking my own rom is just to take stuff out of the rom that I don't need(software like Myphone, voicedialing, worldcard, etc..) and make it as lite as possible. I don't want to do an Teaks at all! Can anyone enlighten me? Any help will be appropriated. thanks
