Just curious, when you set your password what did you put the password prompt on? I have mine at 24 hours, so that I rarely have to unlock my phone. If yours is set to a short time limit that might be your problem.
Settings -> Security -> Phone lock -> Input password -> Adjust time.

Here's the thread that helped me remove the "slide to open" feature.
