GPS TOPO Program?!

Hey I cant seem to find a good program that will emulate a hiking GPS with topo maps? Any suggestions? The search feature has not been my friend.

google has been somewhat helpful with info from 2007 and for windows CE and whatever, there are a few that look good, i was hoping for a fellow PPCG that had some first hand suggestions. Hence the topic.

garmin xt has topo maps. But really if you want it for hiking get a standalone unit. The phone will be dead after a few hours running gps software.
