Re: What do you think of Windows Phone 7?

The more I read, the more I want to cry over the impending death of my favorite OS. I hate you, Microsoft. WP7 looks like a kid's toy! If I wanted my phone to have an Instinct-like UI, I'd have gotten a damn Instinct. 7 looks like a flashy overlay that you'd find on a dumbphone. I know they wanna win over the drooling masses with eye candy, but what about us geeks? The people who use their phones for things other than listening to top 40 & Twittering? This is a HUGE step back for WM. I do not know what MS is thinking with this monstrosity & it truly hurts my heart to see them raping WinMo like this. Did they not see what happened with Palm? "Wow, look how WebOS has taken over the market, and look how happy long-time Palm users are that they can't run their old apps anymore! We SO need to get in on that!" /sarcasm. They are crucifying themselves with this move.

Windows Mobile has a HUGE geek following, and MS is going to lose a lot of customers if they abandon us to cater to the Facebook crowd. They'll be alienating a crap-ton of long time users, and I for one don't appreciate it. I NEVER thought I'd say this- but if MS is really gonna give the big F-U to us geeks, or if they don't offer options to those of us who care more about functionality than cute icons & Myspace, well... then Android or even the iPhone(shudder) might just be an option for me. Never thought I'd seek comfort in the arms of an enemy, but if the rumors turn out to be true, then that might just happen.

I've spent a lot of money of WM apps over the years, and I'll be damned if I'm gonna give them up for cloud storage & 'tiles'. To put it in perspective for those of you who think I'm overreacting- How would you feel if the OS you've used for years on your computer was suddenly completely rewritten & now you could only do one thing at a time, had far less options, and none of your favorite programs worked with it anymore? What if you had to find alternatives to every program you used to use every day? And what if they did it just to cater to DUMB PEOPLE who couldn't figure out how to use the old OS? You'd be PISSED. You'd feel betrayed by the company. That's how I feel about WM7.

I hate it when companies fix things that aren't broken. It happens every time I find something I really like. Yes, WM needed updating, but it didn't need to be completely redone into a whole new OS. Yeah they might eliminate some crashes, but they've also gotten rid of everything that makes WinMo great. WTF. But I guess appealing to teenagers, soccer moms, and tech-tards is more important than keeping existing customers happy & making an actual good, robust product.

/rant. Sorry, sometimes it just helps to bitch.

"enough"? Nope, All companies wants to be on top. A company that just aim for "enough" sales should start doing something else.

Here, WM is clearly losing. They need to step up while there's still time. Who bought all those HTC devices? Apparently, we are not enough for WM to make it on top. They are way below.

Re: What do you think of Windows Phone 7?

Yes, WM7 series looks to be a completely different experience. Yes, I'm sure M$ will make money from "their" new devices come the holiday time frame....

I'm not buying this whole shebang. Apps that I've found/bought over the years...all of a sudden is null and void?? I like the bleeding edge, but I don't want (what seems like) a completely new ecosystem to "play" in. If that was the case, I would have jumped to Android when the Hero came out!!

M$ wanted to take their mobile O/S to a different direction...but at the same time...I think they've alienated a bunch of longtime/hardcore WinMo lovers.

So, here is to Supersonic, may you PLEASE come to Sprint...so that I may serve Google and Android willingly and obediently (chances are, we will ALL be indoctrinated at birth thru nanotech developed for Google to have built in ad supported search that can gleam your tendencies thru reading our DNA strand!!)

If you're referring to my post, I think you're missing what I'm saying. I'm not really concerned with installing TO the SD card, rather installing FROM the SD card.... or FROM any source other than an app store, something I can keep locally. Even installing from a PC using Activesync or Mobile Device center.... so everything doesn't have to be re-downloaded.

Re: What do you think of Windows Phone 7?

Well, unless someone is willing to pay my ETF, I'm sticking with my Touch Pro 2 with Windows 6.5 no matter what I think of Windows Mobile 7 or Android until 11/2011 (unless someone makes a fully functional version of Android to work on my TP2)

But to be honest, I ain't impressed. No real multitasking. no tweaking, and no way to get apps except for the Marketplace. And I'm not even impressed with the GUI. Too simplistic, not enough things available on the "home" screen (or whatever they call it). Its obvious they're going for the iPhone market, but I think it's going to be a big fail for MS. As a "fun fone", I actually like the iPhone interface better than WM7.

This all reminds me of the "Windows Me" fiasco

The reason why microsoft did so horribly was because microsoft never stood behind their product. They were following outdated policy where all you had to do was license it and it move on. I mean the hardware manufacturer's were literally crippling the windows phones so much it is not funny. Thus people were experiencing lag and having all these issue.

I mean if you think about teen audience, how many don't know how to use a computer? they all do, but when they picked up those windows mobile phones and it lagged up like crazy and didn't make phone calls cause they had another app running they just gave up on windows mobile.

If microsoft would have enforced better hardware from them like they do for WP7 now from day 1, microsoft would have been on higher on the list.

Re: What do you think of Windows Phone 7?

I never thought I'd see a day when integrated Twittering would take precedence over multitasking. I'm honestly in shock here.

The complexity is what I love most about winmo, WHY does every company feel the need to dumb everything down?! I swear- I've said it before & I'll say it again- we are hurtling toward real-life Idiocracy at an alarming rate. When Microsoft has to reduce their business-oriented mobile OS to a series of brightly colored buttons & huge text in order to appeal to people, then it's time to start worrying.

Re: What do you think of Windows Phone 7?

I think I'm probably the only one who feels this way but....

I'm really looking forward to WP7S! I'm going to be sure to get it as soon as Sprint offers up a phone with it.

I absolutely love how the UI looks. I've used a ZuneHD and if my phone acts the same way, it's going to be a welcome change. The UI is right up my alley in the aesthetics department. I love that everything is flat and graphical. I love the use of typography and the cut off text is absolutely an excellent way to indicate that if you move around, you'll see more data. I think that Apple's "realistic" style is so dated. WP7S's design is the first thing that really feels like it belongs in the year 2010.

There are so many people out there complaining about how you won't be able to customize it and how awful it will be. For me, the only reason I build my own custom ROM is to get rid of every trace of HTC's stuff from my phone and then to fix the problems with WM. If I can have a phone that works well right out of the box that I won't have to do a bunch of stuff to, I'll more than welcome it! Who really thinks that doing registry edits on your phone is acceptable? Just for the record, I hate the iPhone. I hate the stupid grid of icons and the UX design. Of course, if you want to be able to make your phone as ugly and slow as you choose, Android is waiting for you with open arms and Windows Mobile Classic is going to be around for a long while.

Of course, there's still a lot of questions to be answered. Is there a file system? How extensible is the system? Can I replace Bing with Google if I want? Hopefully, they'll address everything at MIX next month.

I forget where I heard this but apparently they're going to enable Visual C# 2010 Express for WP7S development. If that's true, there's no reason why there won't be a ton of apps.
