Flashing once again

I'm flashing for my second time and want to know if I have to flash back to my stock rom first I've read it in many places but whats the point?

to make sure there are no traces left from the old rom I believe.

Kinda like a chaulk board I guess, the more you write on, the more you have left over chaulk. Flashing to stock is like cleaning the board with water, so you know that there are no traces left.
