Compress System Images

Is it possible, and if so, worth it, to compress the images in the Windows folder?

There is nearly 50 Mb of just BMP's in the windows folder, not to mention other image formats, and it seems Lossless compression can achieve >80% compression. Could this compression be used to free up rescources?

Sorry if this has already been covered, I didn't find anything in a quick search and I figured that if we can compress exe's the same might apply to images.
