getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
I am getting a TP2 today. Ive had the TP1 for over a year. But my heart still says iphone..the apps...the interface.
Whos had both and what do people like better? |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
I'm veturing to guess that you haven't really tinkered/modded your TouchPro since you're "new" (according to your post count) to the forum.
if you haven't...then I suggest you do MORE reading here on the Touch Pro to see and learn of the myriad of possibilities concerning your current phone. Then imagine that and MORE concerning the Touch Pro 2. True you can unlock the iPhone and it has all those apps...but really...do you really want to get locked into that closed environment? I have an iPod Touch (jailbroken) but have yet to be able to have the kind of freedom I have on my Touch Pro 2 when we talk about customizing. besides, it'll be down to personal preference.... |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
I don't think it is wise posting about comparing a TP2 and Iphone in this forum... things can get pretty nasty (towards you and iphone) I once had an iphone and ipod touch first gen, it was neat and all that but not being able to have a spare battery killed it. I've become a Windows mobile geek indeed. I don't see myself getting an iphone anytime soon unless WM dies....

Wirelessly posted (HTC Touch Pro 2 (Sprint): Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 8.12; MSIEMobile6.0) Sprint T7380)
idk bout an iphone as i never had 1 but untill i use a on screen keyboard that can replicate those real full qwerty 1z similar to tp & tp2 me, dumpringz would stick to tp2 .. but thats jus dumpringz lol |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?

Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
I had a 3Gs and brought it back to the store, trading for a TP2. The iPhone was fun to play with, but at the end of the day ATT locks down what you can do on the network (when you have coverage) and Apple locks down what you can do with the device. For a long time I maintained that the iPhone was far and away the best piece of hardware out there but it's crippled by the restrictions that the carrier and manufacturer put on it (also of note, you can only associate it with an iTunes library on one PC, which was part of the killer for me).
That being said, my wife just got a Droid, and that thng is NICE. Firsthand use of the 3Gs, TP2, and Droid, and I'd say Droid wins, but that's personal preference. The TP2 is really missing a capacitive touchscreen- the interface always feels sluggish and clumsy to me. |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
i have both. personally...the iphone gets really, really...boring! and apple has a fit about every little jailbreak/unlock and hates on you for downloading cracked apps. i neglect my iphone now that i have a touch pro 2.

Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
I think the top 3 phones are the Tp2, VZW Droid and iPhone.
You just have decide what you want. To me more than half of the "Customizations" are just to get the TP2 functioning reasonably. Once I get that (and I may have just that), I don't plan on mucking with it and move on to other joys. You have to factor in Plan costs, Phone Performance, Core Applications and "Fun Applications". No question iPhone has a lot of "Fun Applications". But it's a matter of opinion about it's network performance as a phone for some parts of the country. My experience is that it's poor as a phone. In dense areas areas it's probably fine. As far as core apps I think the iPhone is a bit behind or neck and neck with the top 3 phones. Plan wise iPhone is really expensive. If iPhone had a reasonble cost plan and network performance I'd probably have one. For me Network and cost come first. VZW is very expensive too. Droid is a nice phone. Wimpy key board but over all a nice phone, and some of it's core apps are really awesome like Google Nav that you can speak too. But I can get an inexpensive plan on sprint (SERO) but not every can get that and get 90% Network performance of Verizon. But even new plans are cheaper on Sprint. My "core" apps on TP2 are pretty darn good (iGuidance, fancy calculator, google maps, email (Exchange), contacts, Voice Command etc.). The rest is just a gravy (fun apps) that I don't want to pay for. There is no right or wrong choice, you just have to decide for yourself. With a lot of work, I don't find TP2 sluggish what so ever. But it's a bit crazy what you have to learn and fiddle with to get there. By the way I talk on the phone with Voice Command while navigating all the time and you can't do that with an iPhone. iPhone cannot multi-task believe it or not. It's like the old Palms that it can only do one thing at a time. It gives you impression it multi tasks because it restores state. But if you get a call while navigating your hosed. You have to choose one or the other. You might be able to receive a call while navigating but I don't believe you can use the voice command while navigating. Android on TP2 may be option some day too. But I think it may end up being doggy and not worth running. |

I thought that was an OS limitation. Is it like a "setting" to only run that way. Any idea why they disable it? |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
I've had both as I used to be ATT and Sprint. I thought the Iphone was a great "entertainment" device (ie Ipod), but stunk as a phone. It had terrible battery life and it just wasn't what I needed in a phone.
My TPII on the other hand, has been great. The phone is great, the internet is zippy, it handles email, excel, word, etc without any hiccups. And, most importantly, the battery is very good. |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
Get the iPhone if you just want your phone to work right without headaches and want to use all sorts of apps.
Get the TP2 if you like to use an antique outdated OS so you can remember the “good ole’ days” and have nothing better to do than have constant patches and updates instead of actually using your phone. |

keep tp2 if you want more out of your phone and want to push it to the limits. you have to jailbreak to multitask?that is bad not a smart device. ps nikkig you would think with all the tp2 bashing you do you would have got rid of your tp2 and would be rocking an iphone you must not dislike it as much as you claim. |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
wow, some pretty good and intelligent posts in this thread.
Once I saw, the words "TP2 or iphone" in the title, I was like "uh oh, here we go again..." Edit: OK, I spoke too soon... lol. The inevitable is happening. |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
Ok picked up the TP2. Ok ive played with MANY custom roms in TP1. And honestly after a few months on each custom rom there was something wrong with it.
TP2 looks nice, feels nice...but its the same ol Win. Should i update to custom rom. Will the custom roms be like the TP1 roms where there will be some items not working? |

Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
just going to chime in and say business, rather anything work related on the droid and the iphone is horrible...its just that bad for my uses. Touch pro 2 was geared toward my interests a bit more than either iphone and the droid...I really don't like droid personally but I am impressed with the development it has received...
that said my personal belief is that the droid os/desktop/home screen/program menu actually sucks without the sense ui. It wasn't clunky, but felt unpolished and very incomplete. If anything I would honestly suggest getting the htc hero, root your device and get a custom build on your phone ASAP...it makes the device pur... all that said for me and business that is touch pro 2 |

Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
This is all I really gotta say about this topic:
The TP2 is a great device that is way better than my TP ever was, however, it's internals are showing it's age and the random lockups (no where near as many as my TP had) really bug me. Other than that it's the best WM phone I've had the pleasure of owning. Next at this point in time you won't catch me buying ANY Apple product unless it was an iMac (and even those are having yellow screen issues check Gizmodo for the full rundown) because on Jan. 27th they will be introducing most likely their Tablet, next MacBook Pro refresh, iPhone OS 4.0 and maybe even a new iPhone which is due for a hardware refresh this June. So more importantly I wouldn't buy an iPhone assuming a newer better one is coming in June. |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
I think the best way to determine what will work for you is to analyze what activities you do the most. I mostly care about i/o speed. The longer I have to actually touch my device, the more I consider it a failure. My time is better spent using data, not inputting or retrieving it. I am a HEAVY (50-75 outgoing/day) texter, so having a physical tactile keyboard is going to weigh heavily against a virtual.
As for apps, outside of listening to music, occasionally hitting twitter, and using my calendar/reminders, there isn't much I do on a regular basis, and all three phones do them almost as well as the others (droid being the worst). Gaming is definitely horrible on WM, everything looks like was made for Win 95 (and probably was), but if you're not a portable gamer (I'm not), then it is irrelevant. The bottom line is you need to figure out how well the phones do the tasks you're GOING to do a thousand times, not how well they COULD do something you might use sometime, and go from there. |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
just to reiterate...it really comes down to preference. i wouldn't get an iphone knowing i have the tp2. so far by experience i wouldn't give up the tp2 for anything. it has everything i can pssibly use it for :)

Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
It does boil down to preferences what doing what you need. Comparing the TP2 to the iPhone is like comparing a 1995 Toyota Corolla to a 2002 Ford Ranger. They're both vehicles, they're both useful, one is older than the other, But you can't really compare the two because they both serve different purposes and different aesthetics. A lot of Pro-iPhone/anti-TP2 that I see is nothing more than e-Penis rhetoric. Get over it already. :P

Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
If only the TP2 had a faster processor, it really wouldn't be that bad. Its just slow and not as smooth viewing web pages like the iPhone was. I don't know why those stupid idiots at HTC didn't bother to update the processor from the TP1.
I mean come on, if your gonna release something "new" they could've at the very least boost the processor a bit and maybe added more memory instead of just slapping on a bigger screen. They probably did it on purpose to give you a reason to jump to the snapdragons later. |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
IMHO most people will tell you to go with the phone your like. At the end of the day it's the one you use the most because of the features it has.
Personally I tinker for a while then just leave it at that and use what it's got, reason I tinker is because it's missing something. Those that will flame about iphone are just not opening minded or have some sort of twisted desire for it, but don't want to give in. Many people on here that have been long time users have both or all 3.. Personally I think the Iphone is a nice piece of hardware and cool software. WinMo trully has it's limits and as much as I try to add to it, it just lacks some interesting things. Now you should consider Android, again IMHO it's best of both worlds. Just don't let people's opinions sway you, take each as a grain of salt. Go to the stores and handle each. Do on them what you would normally do and see which does it best for you. i.e. Browsing, Social Networking, SMS/MMS, Pictures, Multimedia player, GPS, games, etc.. The TP2 is nothing different from it's predecessors, except for Sence UI, thanks in part to custom ROMS. With the new plans from Verizon and AT&T, it's only about $20 per month difference. So you have choices. |

Good points, consider the same with the TP2, it is outdated. New units already out and others coming very soon (HD2..), would be something more to consider. So far all versions of WinMo have "nothing" new.. Oh yeah they added a front end gui similar to the Zune's, lucky for most HTC stepped up to the plate and had some Sence, UI that is.. WinMo 7, more of the same. |
Re: getting tp2 today...thinking about iphone..whos have both?
Another thing, as someone mentioned, it that the TP2 is one of the best WinMo phones on the market, especially for Sprint. The problem is that WinMo itself is so outdated that its not really competitive anymore. The problem is so bad is that HTC had to develop its one software just to make the ugly WinMo look halfway decent.
This is all Microsoft’s fault. They basically got lazy and stopped development on WinMo, when the iPhone came and put WinMo to shame, M$ basically conceded the market to iPhone probably to not have anti-trust issues. M$ only recently got back into the Smartphone game after Google entered because they were worried Google will also later make a full PC OS that can compete with its profitable Windows. I think that’s the real reason M$ is doing WinMo 7, not to stop iPhone, but to go after Android knowing if Google gets too successful in the Smartphone business, they can later enter the PC operating system business and really hurt M$. |

Reason you have to jailbreak the iphone is in order to run non-apple store apps, like the one that allows you to multitask on the iphone, similarly to the Palm Pre. Oh I do have to add though in all fairness, most iphone users complain about it dropping calls. So yes network consideration is an issue. |

Then the complaints would be; device gets hot, battery life is terrible, wow this things weighs a ton, it's thick like a brick, why does it cost $200 more than a TP2, why doesn't it have 8 megapixels, how come no multitouch, where's the flash, where's the keyboard and dude that thing is huge... BTW just because the MHz are the same 528, doesn't mean it's the same speed as previous CPUs.. Also consider Droid is as fast as Nexus One, if not faster. It's also hard to consider today's phones, knowing that is 3-6months there is a new one coming out. |
