I think you mean when you click on a message and the htc threaded message comes up where you reply, correct? If so, it should already flip to landscape. I am not on 2.5 at the moment, but I remember it already adjusting. Correct me if I am wrong.
What version of 2.5 are you using, and which rom. I can flash, and check it out, been itching to, lol, just havent had the time to mess with all that in the last few weeks.

HKEY_Current_User/Software/HTC/HTCSensor/Whitelist
(binary string) "Windows Media"="WMP for Mobile Devices"

under modulelist you can enter the path to it:
"Windows Media"="\Windows\wmplayer.exe"

use a registry editor. quotations not included in your actual entry

I got it to work!!!! I just had to change wmplayer.exe to WMplayer.exe

Thank you so much!!....Though everytime I go to the "Library" and I go to portrait mode, the screen does want to go back to landscape until I go back to the media player screen..... It's a small bug and I think I can live with it, but if you have any idea please let me know......Thank you !!!!

ps...do you know how to do this with the "fexplore" and the "start" menu?

I checked the registry on my phone and that is exactly how I have it entered in the registry and it works. Try just doing the whitelist and not filling in the modulelist. Make sure everything is entered correctly and that it is entered as binary string not as dword.

For the start menu, are you on 6.1 or 6.5?
