#1: Backup all of your contacts, calendar, tasks, pictures, documents, and anything else saved on the phone itself. Stuff on your storage card is fine, but backup the phone stuff. I suggest using MyPhone, found at http://myphone.microsoft.com and selecting contacts, calendar, tasks, and text messages. Then copy any pictutes and documents you have on the device to your storage card (don't select storage card as a sync option in MyPhone).

After you do all of that, you will have an awesome new phone. You will also have the Windows Marketplace installed, and you can find plenty of apps there.
