Re: Best Vent Mount?

I think I'm going to get a proclip when I get a chance. The vents in my VW don't seem to like any of the cheap mounts that I've attempted. They always fall off.

Re: Best Vent Mount?

I have never been a fan of any vent mount. ProClipUSA often can provide a better solution for mounting a mobile device in a place you would never have thought possible. Their products are really great; I have a ProClip in both my cars.

Re: Best Vent Mount?

The thing is, I don't want to stick anything to the glass, and my car doesn't lend many other places to put it.

I have a datalogging app on my TP2, keeping it in view while the car is running is useful.

This picture is a bit old, it was while I was swapping the instrument cluster. I have a couple of gauges on the a-pillar now so the small defroster vent is out of the question.

The center vents are in a great position - that's where I want my phone to sit.

I totally agree. I would never consider getting a window mount for anything. I keep my vehicle clutter-free and window mounts, while they may hold on well most of the time, can fall off and become a danger in the car. The vent mount I have would need to break the vent off in order to come loose. Also losing any visibility from having something stuck to the windshield would irritate the heck out of me.

More info on the datalogging application please. I guess I haven't looked at Windows Mobile apps for that at all.

Since my thread got a bump a little bit ago :P

The app is OBD Gauge and I have a bluetooth OBD-II datalogger in the Mustang at all times. I just connect to it with my phone or computer and watch the info. When I'm driving, erm... spiritedly.... it's nice to have intake temps and spark timing at easy access, especially on a supercharged car.

At the same time, I need this info for racing at the track, or at an autocross... in an autocross the blower will soak up a lot of heat quick. They'll never let me keep the phone up on the windshield, not SCCA approved. Same goes for the drag strip, NHRA rules won't allow anything stuck to the windshield for both visibility and flying-object hazards. Understandably so, both of these things are pretty violent, a windshield mount just won't stay.

Re: Best Vent Mount?

If you folks would actually visit the proclipusa website, enter the model of your vehicle and the device you want to install, the website will show you options for your vehicle. I have ProClips in my vehicles for different devices. They are all high quality, easy to install and are pretty darn rugged. Why use a vent mount unit when there may be another, stronger, mount available?

Re: Best Vent Mount?

+1 for bracketron

I fretted over this for a while, researched, read review blah blah, and you know what braketron offa ebay or from BB is the way do go, 10-15 bux, if you break it, so what, and it works.

Dont loose sleep over it or spend over 20bux.

Didn't realize there was already an app out for OBD-II reads. I'm a bit concerned with the Bluetooth security of such a device. Does it require pairing and can stay hidden (not discoverable)? My car has never had a good spot to mount any aftermarket gauges so I've been looking for something similar to this. My previous car had an old Haltech E6K and I had used a craptop mounted to the center console and I miss the visibility into that sort of data.

I do autocross occasionally but mostly rally and rally-x stuff so I understood your need for avoiding the window mount. My vent mount passed several tech inspections (sans phone though).
