The Touch Pro2, Work, and Custom ROMs

So I just bought a TP2 for someone and they use push email from work. I've heard many people talk about not flashing to custom ROMs because of work. Why? I'm asking because I wanted to flash the phone before i give it as a gift, but if there will be problems with the person's exchange stuff... i guess i shouldn't. Do certain work policies create problems when coupled with unlocking or a custom ROM? Are people using 6.5 custom ROMs with their work exchange without a problem or is there something i should know?

Re: The Touch Pro2, Work, and Custom ROMs

I'm just a noob but WM 6.5 seems more stable and overall better OS than my stock 6.1 was. My push email still works fine after flashing, but i don't have any accounts set up on exchange server.

There are plenty of WM 6.5 devices out there running fine with corporate exchange servers. I'd steer away from the super custom ROMs just to be safe though.

Re: The Touch Pro2, Work, and Custom ROMs

I've never had a problem connecting to my exchange server at work with any ROM. I say go ahead and change it... just keep in mind that by changing the ROM you are now going to be tech support for any little bugs they encounter... rather than Sprint. I'd never flash my mom or GF's phone cause I'd have to answer all kinds of questions about silly glitches that I would just ignore or find a fix for.

Re: The Touch Pro2, Work, and Custom ROMs

I have run 6.1, 6.5, 6.5.1, 6.5.3 all on custom ROMs and no issues with my work exchange. I've also come to use the exchange as a dependable back-up source for my data.

sounds like i'm in the clear, thanks.
ha i'm already the tech support with or without custom ROMs (well with the help of ppcg and xda). I wouldn't wish it upon anyone to call sprint for help... i remember back when i didnt know anything about WM, i called and spent an hour with them and the only thing i had to show for it was them accidentally taking away perks i had on my plan. What a headache it was to call and convince another rep that they screwed my account up.

anyway, good looking out on that. sometimes i forget how difficult it could be for inexperienced users to handle WM.

Sprint Service is great as long as you NEVER have to talk to them, my last round they changed my plan without telling me and it took almost 4 months and $500.00 in credits to get it fixed.

Re: The Touch Pro2, Work, and Custom ROMs

Perhaps this is related to people adding a custom cab or registry fix to disable the Exchange lock policy. Certain companies, ours included, push out a default lock policy that will lock the phone and force a PIN to be entered to unlock it after a certain amount of time e.g. 15 minutes of inactivity. Normally the end-user cannot undo / remove this policy. There is a registry tweak and cab out there to circumvent the policy though If the IT security group at the company detect this, then that would most certainly present a problem for the employee. Perhaps this is what you may have read about in the past???

Re: The Touch Pro2, Work, and Custom ROMs

OK just FYI lipidfats, this may be overkill, but exchange for sure works on MR 12.06 with WM 6.5. Just set it up myself. In case you are curious, google also offers an exchange service which includes syncing contacts and calendar items. very useful!!

here's the instructions:

Remember to uncheck "tasks" if you sync with google.

If you are giving it as a gift I would leave it stock.
