Plastic strips

Do these plastic strips on either side of the keyboard (where it slides) serve a purpose, or are they just for shipping purposes?

On my first Mogul I didn't even know they were there for 6 weeks. Only found out when it was swapped out for a new one at the store.

hahha funny. I thought the plastic strips were actualy the plastic buffers themselves. I thbought it was a nice bling bling look to it until I noticed a air bubble. Then I took them off. Then I regret it because it wasn't shinny and blingy.
