Will my programs work on a new ROM

I have searched the forum and cant seem to find one thread that will help a noob like me.

I am new to windows mobile. I just got a xv6800 for verizon, and I would like to see if I can make it run a little faster, and put some cool apps on it. I figured out how to run .cab files, and the basic configurations, but i have no clue about ROMs.
If I get a new ROM, im guessing i should sync before so my info will be in outlook, then sync after to put it all back??
what about my txt threads? will they be lost?
and the biggest question.... will my programs that i have for windows mobile work with a new ROM?
If someone can please explain the basics of a getting a new ROM, it would probably be the biggest help. Once i do that, I will prob feel easier about "cooking" one. (i guess that with that I can pick and choose what I want)
