Inside the HTC Mogul

Howdy all!

I have a Mogul sitting around waiting to be returned to the store and I thought I would take a few minutes to disassemble it and snap pictures of everything I could get to and post for all of your enjoyment!

I've done some searches to see if anyone's documented the phone this throughly, but didn't find much. I'm always curious about how things are built so nothing is safe. The Mogul is pretty well built a nice solid phone from a hardware standpoint.

Without further ado, the pictures. Click the thumbnails for full-resolution photos.

Here's our unsuspecting victim, the PPC-6800. You've all seen this picture before anyways.

The back cover removed. Here you can see the speaker, the flash, the camera and the external antenna connector. At the bottom, the vibrator, reset button and HTC proprietary USB connector.

This is what the bottom half of the phone looks like with the motherboard removed. You see three ribbon cables here. The very left one is for the keyboard, the middle one is for the screen and front panel buttons and the very right is the camera on its own little pcb. I have no idea what the small chip on the board is to the upper left of the keyboard connector is.

Here is the other side of the motherboard. As you can see, shields cover all of the chips. Towards the right side of the phone, you can see the IR reciever and microSD slot. Along the bottom edge you can see the plugs for the connectors mentioned above. The shot below that has the covers removed.


We're going to go around the board here. I have close up shots of all of the chips.
Bottom right: BRF6300 is Bluetooth, WL1251 is Wifi


Middle right: Both memory chips - Samsung is likely RAM, the chip labeled X is likely ROM. COuld be wrong though.

Middle left: Qualcomm MSM7500 - Main processor, EVDO Rev. A capable

Middle Bottom: Qualcomm PM7500 - Handles I/O, keyboard, backlights, power regulation, etc...

Top Left: This chip, the RFR6500, sole purpose seems to be to better handle CDMA signals for better signal with lower battery life and smaller form factors. It seems to also support off-network GPS. Wording is vague though. The closest literature I found was for a RFR6125 and since Qualcomm generally uses the same family name for the same chips, I'm going with the 6500 being a slightly improved version of the 6125 which supported -152db GPS signals.

Bottom Left: RFT6150 - This seems to be a helper chip for the RFR6500 and, according to Qualcomm, actually handles the GPS signal. The AWT6137 and 6138 are power amplifiers. I can't find good info on the other two chips.

Is it possible to swap the Black case of an Alltel ppc 6800 on a Sprint Mogul?

I covered it, probably after you posted. It's a AWT6137 - Radio Amplifier.

IF you had a alltel phone laying around to use the easiest thing to do would be to disassemble both of the alltel phone and remove the motherboard. Then take the motherboard from the Sprint mogul and place it in the Alltel casing.

They look identical on the outside so there shouldn't be any problems but no promises.

Otherwise, if you just had the casing, the bottom shell is not hard to change out but the top part housing the screen is really tight. So tight I wasn't comfortable taking it apart past what I did. I removed the two flaps on the underside of the top but it was pretty sealed around the screen.

those samsung chips are definitely the RAM

you think the "X" chip is the flash rom? thats what im trying to identify...
