Microsoft Activesync 4.5 remote sync?

I have read that Activesync 4.5 does not have the remote sync capabilities due to security issues (whatever that means) but I'm not sure if an older version such as 4.2 is compatible with the Mogul. Does anyone know if this is possible? Through Activesync or another program?
I would like to be able to sync everything, but my main intentions at the moment are to get files into a certain folder on my desktop remotely. Anyone have any thoughts? Ideas are all appreciated. I was thinking perhaps setting up a seperate email account that would automatically download attachments from Outlook etc.
