  1. Sprint and HTC said they are enabling GPS on the Mogul in Q1 2008 and the Touch has been listed to get the same update on Sprint's site
  2. The Touch has an internal GPS antenna according to Sprint specs and guide
  3. I posted the FCC pic of the internals of the Titan/6800 showing the internal GPS antenna which you said wasn't there (you got the BT/Wifi one right, but missed GPS); others confirmed it is still there on the released device
  4. The Moto Q q9c is now selling on Sprint with standalone working aGPS (sat based), working with 3rd party programs (I tried it myself)
Did I miss anything here? I'm not a "hopeful fool", just someone who lays out the evidence and connects the dots.

Hey I'm willing to wait too. I don't have any idea if Sprint will limit it, lock it down, though if the Q9c is any evidence, it at least looks to be open.

I'm not sure if increased competition changed Sprint's mind on this, but they are finally buying devices that are capable of GPS. I'll fully admit that the 6700, 700wx don't have an internal antenna and that may limit what they could do here for GPS, but the Mogul, Touch and Q9c are different AFAIK.

Go on ppcgeek ftp to see, definetly the thrue... GpsOne FCC repports....
Take a time to read. You'll find that the msm 7500 chip set is using the same anthenna as the phone for gps. To get the right frequencies(Gps and phone are differents frequencies), the signal is modulated. The first idea when creating the QSC convergence series...

From HTC mouth: it is a full fledge gps, it will ONLY use agps technology to locate your position.

evdo rev A has nothing to do with it, and when i asked if there is currently a registry hack that we can use to unlock that he laughed and said " i read those forums too, but i cannot get into details because this call might be monitored"

Many people seem to be mistaken about what this thread was originally arguing the existance of. There is zero doubt the phone is capable of aGPS, I personally have seen coordinate fix's on my own 6800 via the e911 system, that's a given.

The question is whether it truly has a antenna inside it capable of picking up anything besides the background noise level for the frequencies GPS satellites use to transmit their beacons. I have seen your fcc posted pic, too bad that is not what the 6800's main board has. What we do have is not tuned for 1.575ghz unless I've missed something.

When sprint says a device has GPS, they aren't promoting a feature or promising anything, it's simple a marketing person's "scheme" to convince customers that this is a device for them. If the phone has nothing more than aGPS they can still call it GPS and technically be accurate enough. They've done it many times and will continue to do it so long as they make more money doing so.

If the device has the standalone antenna and RC matching pair afterall, it would simply be missing 2 more parts. The rom would need GPS support drivers and a kernel knowing about them; and the radio would need to be flashed to one enabling the radio's gps commands. The radio does not match the ID naming scheme HTC has used on every other standalone GPS device they have released. Granted, that proves nothing.

I hope I'm wrong, I'd love to have gps on this phone since I'm now back on cdma. I just don't think it's likely however.

Actually, that got me thinking about it a bit more, and since murph's pics just don't show that part well enough, I'm opening my own phone now to measure the traces on it and see if it is tuned for gps or not. If so, we'll find out right now. Give me 10 minutes.

I'm pleased to say that the same process has now been carried out and tested on the Motorola Q9H (AT&T) smile.gif Check out the topic linked above for the background, or read on to get started!

The activator is vailable as either a 'over the air install' or a PC based install or an on-device CAB install (choose one or the other to suit), the activator provides the all important missing COM port for GPS access. After installing (and rebooting), you'll find you have a new COM5 port, and you can use any GPS application you like to your hearts content.

Enjoy people, and spread the word to fellow Q9H owners!

P

PS As a little bonus, this package also application unlocks your device, letting you do things like reorder the Start Menu how you like, etc!
PPS Don't forget our Q device discussion area, online now at http://Q.MoDaCo.com!

Over the Air Install: Enter 'http://modaco.com/gpsactivatorq9h' in your device browser!

On device Install (registered members): Attached File MoDaCo.SmartphoneGPSActivator.COM5.CAB ( 745bytes ) Number of downloads: 78

On PC Install (registered members): Attached File Setup.MoDaCo.SmartphoneGPSActivator.COM5.EXE ( 55.77K ) Number of downloads: 35

Trust me, I agree with this 110% and I was in the "No GPS on Sprint WM devices" committee for a long time, dispelling hopes and dreams of many new device owners

But I think Sprint gave up on the "lets find a revenue stream for GPS" on their WM devices as they were getting blitzed by AT&T and others.

I think there is strong evidence that the Mogul, Touch and Q9c all do GPS (or rather, potentially can). I know the Q9c does satellite GPS--I've used it myself and it works with other programs. And all the Touch specs mention "internal GPS antenna" which I have not seen before mentioned.

It'll be interesting to see what you find...

If true, it raises other questions, like why the hell did they ship it not enabled, on two devices?

ps
welcome back to CDMA, I remember you switched to the iPhone for a bit. I think CDMA will get interesting in 2008.
