headphone adapter help please! ASAP

bought this adapter online and when i plug it in, nothing happens, the sound still comes through the phone. any ideas?? or do i have to have a driver or change a setting to get it to work??

are you playing the music then pluggin it in, or is it plugged in prior to opening whatever player you're using.
