Verizon GPS question. And how to get Imap to check faster without...
I posted this ealier but it isn't even viewable on the page becase I used prefix 'Verizon'. Strange, but if I change the views to "prefix Verizon" it shows. The Apache section doesn't do this but I don't know...any ways if someone can help me with the below questions...Thnaks in advanced.
So, I folowed the guide to getting GPS working on Verizon's 6800. Works great! I can use Google Maps and see "My Location". But, I have no data plan and am using WiFi, now of coruse I know WiFi is free, but is the GPS free? Am I gonna get billed somehow? I would hate to get a huge bill at the end of the month. I also would not be able to negociate to get a credit as I have in the past because GPS simply is not supported by them. So can it be billed somehow, because by checking my KB usages it it showing about 2kb's at every launch... Please clear the up for me. Thanks. Now, I have now ditched my exchange server set up because it's taking over 15 mins some times before I get an e-mail. My PC gets it faster. I now am using Gmail IMAP. I saw jbu's thread one time on getting it to check every however many what ever instead of every 5mins. I saw that one guy with Homer Simpson in his avatar reply with is trick, but I do not wanna use that because I have just set up my device fully and do not wanna reflash yet. So, any other way to get it to check sooner? If anyone knows please help! Thanks guys!

I think you have to go pop if you want fast send/recieve.. for whatever reason imap likes to chatter too much.

I believe they only charge for the vz navigator. check your bill online and see if you have any charges that shouldn't be there. I've had my phone service shut off before and my gps would still work with wifi.

Re: Verizon GPS question. And how to get Imap to check faster without...
GPS will try to us a small amount of data when it starts if it is setup the way most of the GPS threads advise. If your phone is all setup for wifi only, make sure you go into your verizon network connection settings and put in a bogus password (anything will work)that way if your phone tries to connect to vzw for any reason (data wise anyway) it will prompt you for a password. If it's important enough that you want to connect to vzw make the password blank that time, DO NOT select save password, and you will connect for one data session.
But when your GPS tries to prime itself you will then know if they are going to charge you or not. GPS does not need a data primer, however it gets a lock faster with it. I am not sure that the wifi will or not work as a data stream to help with that lock, I know that a cell data session will help with a GPS lock, and while it is a small amount of data, if you are using your GPS a lot it can add up. More importantly, if it is establishing a cell data session, your pda will likely use that data stream instead of any other you may have currently established. For example: You establish a wifi data session, open live search to find a local business, it starts your GPS, which initiates a cellular data session, your pda will prefer the cell connection and send a data requests though it, even though you have an active wifi connection. This can use a lot more data and end up with a significant data charge at the end of a month. So do as I said earlier about setting that fake password, and you will know if you are connecting to vzw for any of your data... Oh, and if it's too late and they have charged you a couple hundred $, simply ask them to retroactively put you into the data plan, it's still money, but it will save you a lot, you will then be able to call back a month later and cancel the data plan if you want, but you won't want too..... |

If you data prime then yes you are using data to kick it off to lock faster. If not then you will never have a charge. I dont data prime mine and it never tries to dial out either.

Okay, well. I followed the guide from XDA. Is that the one you followed? Maybe some of the settings messed it up...

Re: Verizon GPS question. And how to get Imap to check faster without...
If it is the one that gives an IP and info to assign then that will try to data prime your GPS. I did do that in the beginning but I have my data connection deleted from my phone and also a data block through my carrier. But when I did the aGPS fix for faster GPS locks it would try to data connect (obviously fail) and so I removed those settings and went back the way I originally had it.
