You might try having your friend contact Cricket to have them release the ESN. Now the other thing to be aware of is that Sprint MAY not activate your device, as the ESN is not in their database, then again, they may. My understanding is that it depends on who you talk to @ Sprint. Other folks around here have more experience dealing with this than I have and could give you a more firm answer.

Was it originally a Sprint phone? By that I mean before it was flashed to Cricket. If it was, the ESN was originally in Sprints databases. Usually with the "bigger" companies, they will not activate an ESN that was listed as lost, stolen, or has a remaining balance. They are not able to see if it is currently on Cricket's network or not. Sounds like you may be out of luck on this particular occasion.

You may also want to check with Qwest and see if they have any issues with the ESN as they are using Sprints network and it would seem to me that any issues Qwest has with the ESN would be listed on Sprints stuff.
