Personally, I find Opera Mini to be the best of the bunch - the minimalistic approach is excellent (and yes, I've tried them all - Skyfire, Opera Mobile 8.x and 9.x) There's some CAB files floating around that will install it along with a nice shortcut for opening it.

Why don't you try using phonealarm. I didn't use to get text message notifications until I started using phonealarm.
