Re: Lagging in threaded text in WM6.1
First, are you certain that everything that you have closed is not still using memory? I would recommend Oxios Memory for clearing up memory (attached).
Second, do you have a lot of messages in each of the text threads? I know that when I let the history get pretty big on each of them, it slows it down quite a bit. Therefore I tend to clean up some of the history on the ones from my wife, kids, and a couple of my friends who text me a lot.

Re: Lagging in threaded text in WM6.1
I've noticed a different issue with the Threaded Texts. Whenever I get an SMS message, and I hit reply from the home screen, it brings up my text entry box behind the softkey bar at the bottom of the screen. Easy enough work-around, I disabled screen notification of SMS messages, and tap "TEXT MESSAGES: 1" to read, then hit reply. No issues that way.

Re: Lagging in threaded text in WM6.1
turning off the predicted text and clearing out the cache of new words created will help tremendously with threaded text...auto spell check is a bit of a drag
