I just put my phone in "flight mode" and I was still able to use WiFi.
Make sure your WiFi switch is turned on (located on the left side of the phone - the side the scroll wheel is on) |

Airplane mode is having no connections on. So WiFi won't work. However, all you need to do is flip the wifi switch and then click the phone icon in the comm manager.

Yes, you can go through the phone manager. I'll try the Skype off my phone later today in the local Cafe that has fast wireless. I generally use my computer as the connection is better than via the phone which is always a bit choppy using Skype... even in the USA... which I think probably has to do with the lower speed of many wireless connections, bad speaker/mike and various other phone deamons.
