reason is -> great looking 3d mapping. REAL TIME ON SCREEN POI. POI's simply appear on your map route, and a simple click brings up a tiny window with the name and number of the POI all without ever going off route- and you can dial that number right then and there on screen...
that is a simple feature that is SORELY lacking in the others, even in iGo's latest release - iGo8.
I think TomTom is the worst.. crazy to operate, and just plain ugly.

iGuidance and iGo8 are the only 2 that have real TTS capability (where the voice actually announces the street names).. i WOULD be using iGo8 exclusively, but it's an absolute memory pig, and it crashed time and time again, when in 3D mode with TTS voice turned on... shame ....... i think they need another build to perfect that .. (it's only been released a couple weeks)..
iGuidance was my app of choice, until i saw iGo2006.. i just really like the usability, and graphics .. also a big plus with iGo, unlike that of TomTom, Garmin OR iGuidance, is you are free to only load the maps you wish to use.. meaning, you can get away with a complete GPS solution for your state for around 40MB or so.. better than a 1.2GB real estate with the others..
Granted, you can't map from AZ to PA, if you don't have the states in between right ?
well kind of - iGo has a 'Major US Roads and Highways' map, that you can load up, to do all the connecting navigation between all the states.

i highly recommend iGo2006.. of course if your like me and have a severe obsession and OCD with GPS you won't be able to stop until you've tried them all.
my next mission was actually Destinator v7, but i couldn't find any US maps.. so i gave up.............for now......
Hey, i just got igo2006 and love it. the only problem that i have is that igo can't detect the gps receiver on its own. I have to run live search or google maps or something to turn on the gps, then when i open igo it detects it. why can't igo detect my gps? And is there any simple software out there that isn't a memory hog (cause i found one that was) that can turn on my gps and thats all?

Its a shame too because it really is nice looking, and the POI icons are way awesome.
you know, as i was deleting the folders, there was POI folder with TONS of .png files that made up the icons. i saw the mcdonalds, starbucks, etc..
i'm gonna try and maybe bring in those icons to igo or something !!!

There are a few of them. I have used GPS Assist to prime the GPS, and then the acquisition is quick. I have also used GPS Today which does a great job. Both seem to be relatively small in terms of memory footprint.

Re: The Best "Real" GPS Navigation Software

For those of you running TomTom 6, when you start up the program, does it automatically route you to your "Home" (or last) destination? It does so for me. I'd rather have it say "No route selected" if I just decided to drive with it on, instead of trying to direct me Home when that may not be where I'm going. I've tried searching for a default config of some sort but came up empty. Any ideas?

Try to Clear Your Route before you turn off TomTom. TomTom tries to "help" you by persisting the last set destination which is an awesome feature if your phone crashes while en route. We all know how reliable Windows is.

Sometimes the phone crashes for whatever reason or if you run out of RAM WIndows shuts down TomTom. It's nice to have TomTom bring back the previous destination automatically when you start it up since it is likely you'll be driving then which prevents you from having to reprogram the destination.

Wink Re: The Best "Real" GPS Navigation Software

I personally like TomTom6. I am slowly getting into iGuidance but I guess I got used to TomTom6.

TTS is nice but I got used to dealing without it. I always looked at the next street in TomTom's interface and it did the trick especially for highways that go by more than one name (or number). It's nice to see all of them listed on the screen. I haven't used iGuidance's TTS to see how that's handled.

Now I'm using an 8GB card with two TomTom Maps and iGuidance which take up 3GB of space. I feel I'm set from a backup perspective and from an alternate option for POIs which one of the two programs may not have. If neither program has a POI it's probably not worth visiting or it is too new.

But for all those who use that Sprint software crapola and feel content, do yourselves a favor and try one of these standalone apps. It's such a nice feeling to know that you can never be lost as long as there is gas in the tank (or have some spare batteries) and be independed of an internet connection.

Why can't people read the entire thread? 3MB of RAM, not storage.

You're probably thinking that it shouldn't be this hard, and I agree with you. The iGuidance people should fix their software so that it works correctly with Microsoft's GPS feed. But they haven't, and apparently they won't. So this is the only way to make iGuidance work on the Mogul. It's a hassle, but it's worth the trouble.
FWIW, no priming software is needed any longer. iG4 auto-detecs the port and baud of the internal GPS just fine.

Re: The Best "Real" GPS Navigation Software

I have been using TomTom 7 and i love it. The maps are a little big but with a 4gig sd card its not a real big deal. And with astrogps there is a TomTom button built in (or iguidence if you have that) so its one click and your off. There are no glitches. Phone calls come right through and it will reopen TomTom while im on the phone (bluetooth earpeice) so i still have navigation while talkin on the phone. You can find some great voices (i switch up Homer Simpson and John Clease alot) And with TomTom traffic it shows you any slowdowns and lets you know how far away they are and how long of a delay your lookin at (i.e. "13min" ). Its great software and if ya know what your donig it can be found REALLY REALLY "CHEAP".

Re: The Best "Real" GPS Navigation Software

The problem with Tom Tom is no TTS. Sucks having GPS in the car and still having to look at the phone for street names. iG4 is full TTS.
