Emoticons and Smiley in Text Messages?

I'm a bit new and I swear I have been searching on this, but is there a cab or something that will enable smilies in my text messages? When dealing with my wife, I need to add a smiley face or she thinks I'm picking a fight. We already tussled over the 4 Bens dropped down on the phone!

... see? Don't those help convey my message?
