Does the Garmin XP need the "jump start" on the GPS like TomTom? You know, like clicking Google maps first? If so, has anyone come up with a launcher program. I could not find this info. Thanks. Ginny

you have to purchase and dl the mapsource software to load detailed maps...if you bought the program for the 99 clams you should already have the mapsource software.

Incidently, in case anyone is REALLY interested in Garmin. The sprint application lounge as Garmin Mobile for 9.99/mo. NO this is not the Sprint Nav from Telenav, its a garmin version. I dont know if it uses the net, but I suspect it does otherwise how would they charge 9.99/mo for it.

Re: Garmin GPS.......

finally got it to work.
another person at x-developers had the same problem as me and deleted all his sms messages to get it to work. i did the same and it started working, so go figure.

questions
1. How can you specify what type of POI to display on the map? for example, i want to display only subway entrances and not hotels,restaurants,etc...

2.. how do you keep it from going into standby mode without having to hit a button every now and then?

3. also, is there a way to remove that annoying warning message at the startup?

i was getting that date changing problem too. Had to switch to com 4, but in order for com4 to work, i needed astrogps.

The interface definitely is confusing and is taking some getting used to.

Im trying to install the Garmin XT mobile also, and I could use some help as there doesnt seem to be any real concise directions in one place.

I installed the 3 files. It then tells me I need to unlock it. In order to do so I need a unit id? Im not sure what the Unit ID is, or where I would find it.

1 ) I ran GarminXT
2 ) I chose connect to Garmin GPS
3 ) Skipped detection of GPS device
4 ) Agreed to terms of use
5 ) This brought up main screen showing:
a) Where To:
b) View Map:
c) Tools:
d) Settings:
e) Exit:
6 ) I went to Settings --> About
7 ) Under the about screen:
a) IMEI
b) IMSI
c) Device ID
d) Card ID
8 ) I used the Card ID, and that generated an unlock code, but Im not sure if that is what I should be using.

9 ) The directions state that I should do something with this unlock code. It mentions saving it as sw.unl, and putting it in the Garmin software folder? Do you just put the unlock code in a blank file and nothing else?

If someone could please PM me some detailed instructions id appreciate it. If you do and get it working Ill writeup a nice detailed HOWTO and possibly put a video on YOUTUBE detailing the process.

Thanks!

I keep losing GPS signal for some reason. I haven't been able to pinpoint it, sometimes it will take a soft reset, others it will connect upon launching the app no problem. Anyone else having occasional problems with the the app searching for gps and not finding any?

Just curious... Is everyone installing Garmin XT on the garmin supplied microSD card or are they supplying an option for you to install it on your own card. I want to install it on my own 8gb card and not have to swap cards. I heard this was an issue and an option that garmin was currently working on. Thanks in advanced

One could easily assume that YOU yourself are running a cracked version, which BTW I never stated or implied that I was. Also, I didnt request it to be discussed in the forum. I asked for PM's.

So take a deep breath, get off the high horse, and send me a PM already, Eh? :-$

The way I see it you ARE asking for help to "patch" a program in this public forum. I mentioned there is one ( Cracked version) out there some place sure but I am not posting a link to it,I couldn't tell you where to get it. These are the rules of the site and I'm not breaking them. As far as assuming I have a cracked version one can assume anything one wants because up here on this high horse our GPS works.

So..when you go to load maps on the device using the map software, do you have to pick and choose certain maps or can you just dump the entire US set on? I travel a lot and do not want to pick and choose maps each time i travel.

The way the 2008 north American map is set up you can pick just one region or like I did you can load them all. I just picked all of them and loaded the whole United States. It worked well with the complete U.S.A on it.

I have been using Garmin Mobile XT and its the bee's knee's and couldn't ask for anything better. So here is a cool POI I found its a Red Light and Speed Camera POI and is up to date as of 2-08. It shows and warns you to slow down when you reach one (Cam). Now odds are not ALL cameras are on here but There are a lot of them and it will save ya a ticket in the city I'm sure.
So HERE is the custom POI for the "speed cams/Red Light cams".
This HERE is some info on Garmin Mobile XT (*Cracked version available Google.com) Dont ask I dont know where.
If you already have Garmin gps you will need the Garmin POI Loader to load these to your phone and you can get it HERE.
To install Maps download the map (EX:"City Navigator North America 2008") and then Download a App called Garmin MapInstall for (Windows) HERE (Mac) HERE. Run the map install and it will load your maps.

Ok, so I start looking at the above sites. On the Garmin site I find a link to: http://www.geotourguide.com/node/6

Am I understanding this correctly that say, I am going to Paris, I can download say the Notre Dame one and when I get to a certain spot with my Garmin xt it will start playing the audio tour?

Sorry, I can be dense at times. Is that how yall read it?

it sucks but if you shellout the 99 bucks for the oem version you have to put in thier sd crd when you want to use it. and no pulling it off the card.
sucks because i actually own two licenses for city navigator 2008 from my handheld gps units. cant see spending another 100 bucks for another version of something i already own.

Have you ever tried or looked at a program called memory map pocket navigator?
Its a GPS program that uses nautical, topo maps, allows you to plot courses, mark "fishing hot spots" etc. For nautical chart of lake, you'd have depths, etc. to find structures

I use it on long island sound and the florida intercoastal, and little sebago.

Re: Garmin GPS.......

Thanks for starting this thread. I got it and so far I LOVE IT. Better interface than the TomTom.

Just one question. Has anyone tried to use their blue tooth GPS with the mogul since the new Rom? I will be traveling out of the country this summer and I noticed a couple of folks have said they had trouble getting a GPS lock on the Mogul outside of the US. I am thinking of taking my Holux GPS as a backup. What I don't know is how to "turn off" the internal GPS on the Mogul and then tell it to use the Holux blue tooth. Seems like it also used Com 4.

Would sure appreciate any thoughts, comments and suggestions.

Make sure you know what your phone settings are. I mean like COM4/COM6 ect.(Phone - Settings - System - GPS)
Then run the Garmin application and click Settings.Next you click System - then Remote GPS.

If you choose "Disable" it will bring up a window and give you settings to choose from like "Bluetooth GPS" or "GPS Intermediate Driver" also ""Use Serial GPS".

Choose Use Serial GPS and just make sure the settings match your phones settings, COM4/COM6 ect....

I have found that "GPS Intermediate Driver" Will work and find your GPS, and "Use Serial GPS" works with bolth COM4/COM6 as long as the Garmin settings match your phone settings.
