small problem on my 6800

i just got the 6800 with alltel and ive put a few different things on and taken some off, but now i think ive run into some kind of bug so im putting this thread up to see if anyone else has run into this before or has any ideas to help me out

heres my prob: when i go into settings i cant close out of it. i hit the X button but nothing happens, even after a soft reset the problem is still there. then if i open programs and try to close out of that, the programs will close but then an error message comes up that says "an unhandled error has occurred in the shell. attempting to restart the shell" i hit OK then it soft resets itself.

im really debating a hard reset, but i havent done one yet- since i just got the phone less than two weeks ago. does anyone have any suggestions?

have you installed any shell progs, like SPB mobile shell, or HTC Home or something like that ?
well, if you have, try to startup in safe mode, then uninstall the shell add-in.. then reboot and see if your prob goes away.

i had both actually, uninstalled the spb and switched to HTC home. thats when i ran across the problem, im not sure if it was from the HTC home or not... but i also uninstalled that one. i didnt uninstall either from safe mode- i dont know how to get in to safe mode, but would there be anything i could do now if i started up in safe mode??

Re: small problem on my 6800

hmmm... i just re-read your post.. i had assumed it would just cycle soft-resetting, not letting you actually boot up.. when this happens. when the phone can't boot regular for 3 times in a row, you will be prompted for safe mode.
but you are saying if you open an actual program and then try to close it, it errors and soft resets..
seems to me there is some leftover junk in the reg from either HTC or Mobile shell.
you could try tinkering around with the registry under HKLM/Software/HTC and see if there are some leftover settings that there..... or if your not comfortable with that, grab a program called 'Memmaid'..
there is a section in there called 'installed programs', where it queries your entire device for things that have been 'installed' - then displays all the areas in explorer, AND reg entries, those programs have installed themselves into.. awesome for 'cleaning' up bad/old registry entries..

however, a bit of advice.. don't spend too long on this, as it sounds like the phone is still 'new'.. before wasting your time, consider a hard reset, as it just might save you the headaches.. i have WAY too much time invested in this danged phone now, to even THINK of a hard reset.. so another bit of advice, when you are back up and running the way you want to, pick up SPB Backup, and do a backup of your system data..
this way, you can do a quick and simple restore from that point, next time you (and trust me you will) hose something..

good luck!

Re: small problem on my 6800

thanks nickles, im gonna get that Memmaid, but i did opt to hard reset and its back working great.

Also, i just back everything up with outlook on my computer, is there any advantage to using something like spb backup??

Re: small problem on my 6800

spb backup saves the backup file to either your device or memory card..
i don't do anything through activesync with my PC (i bluetooth things back and forth instead, and use PUSH sync with my Exchange server)...
think of it this way - what if your phone acts up again, you want to do a restore, and your PC is nowhere around. your traveling, etc...

also, a backup prog like SPB, will backup your 'system' and 'data' files.. these are perhaps some files or directories that you may not be manually trasnferring to your PC.
it's not just your outlook contacts you need to transfer.. you need to grab registry, windows system files, DLL's, etc......
