SPB backup fried my update!!!

I would love some help here:

I downloaded the new ROM update, then restored my setting with SPB backup and...
the rom is back to 2.17....

I guess my question is: WHAT do I backup with SPB to get my various programs back without having ot go through the tedium of reinstalling, re typing in every goldarn serial #, person setting, etc, but KEEP my rom update. I want that GPS...

Help? Or help with a differnt program to back it up?
