Best GPS software to use with our new feature?

What software works the best with windows mobile? Ive used Gmaps, and live which work relatively well but im wondering the benefits of using anything a bit more robust.

TomTom?
Alturion?

whats the best?

VulnoX 01-26-2008 07:32 PM

So far I am sticking with Sprint Nav, aside from the initial satellite find on a cold boot, it seems to be the quickest, uses the least memory (iGo is very good for a maps-stored-locally setup, but seems to have iffy compatability with our new GPS feature), and has actual voice guidance (Turn left on 8 Mile Road instead of Turn left in 300 Meters).

It has also found every POI I have thrown at it, even some my TomTom One does not have.

TomTOm just worked fine on a trip to the grocery store. It doesnt have text recognitiion to name of the street names but otherwise does a good job.

Is there a standalone cab for the sprint navigation ro do I need to let it run all its sprint customizations on a hard reset? I usually leave the bloatware out of it but if I have to put it all on there to get sprint nav I guess I can live with it.

I asked about a cab for the Sprint Nav in the thread for the firmware, but never got a response. So for now I am just leaving the Sprint stuff on until someone finds a way to make it a Cab.

You can get the Sprint Navigation CAB (including the other customization files) from here:

Fantastic, thanks for the share!

Iguidance is OK

Have anyone tried Iguidance?

ur a life saver, i've been looking for the Sprint Nav cab all day, and no one has posted it until you did, thank you so much

ffyter 01-26-2008 08:31 PM

Iguidance is decent. The maps are a more up to date in my area(both current up to date maps) on iguidance vs tomtom. Iguidance has text to voice which is nice and actually says the street names. It is hard to read the upcomming street names on the maps and the streets are skinny. I like tomtom much better because of the ease of use with the big buttons and the qwerty keyboard to type on. The display is also much better on tomtom compared to iguidance.

I need to find out if sprint navigation is included in my SERO plan or not. I was supposed to get free powervision, but I don't know if the telenav stuff is included or if i'll be locked down to a free trial.

The software looks great but NO WAY am I going to pay $9.99/month for it when I can just pirate tomtom....did I just say that out loud?

yeah, after paying 600 for my phone, and going through all this bs with serious problems, i'm not paying 10 bucks a month just for that.

If you have an Unlimited Sprint Vision Pack (which all SERO plans have), my understanding is that you get navigation at no extra cost. I have seen this question asked by SERO users with phones that already have Nav (Non-PDA phone).

So don't worry about it until they say you have to pay in the program, and if that happens call Sprint because its probably just a mistake.

Yeah unfortunately. I am near 6 Mile and Farmington.

Sounds like you have either spent some time here or are from here as well. :)

I just used iGuidance on a 2 hour trip. On the way there I used the internal GPS and it was poor at best. It wouldn't refresh unless I tapped the screen and even then it was jumpy and wouldn't move while I was driving. It seemed like the refresh rate with the internal GPS was off or not up to what the program needs. On the wy home I used my Holux bluetooth GPS and that worked perfectly as it always has. I am a big fan of the internal GPS for things like Google maps or doing a Live search to find stuff "near my location" etc but so far, it doesn't seem to be nearly as capable as the Holux. Just a little heads up :-) And yes, I tried with Google Maps running in the background as well to see if that helped and it didn't.

themuffinman 01-26-2008 10:41 PM

I am definitely not a gps software guru but in my opinion the sprintnav is pretty damn good and free with my plan so I can't complain.

Sounds like an issue with iGuidance. I've been playing with google maps, miomaps, and iGo at the moment, and all of them update no problem.

However, I am looking into what Google Maps does to make the gps work. I'm guessing something API related with the intermediate driver. I should then be able to whip up a program to run in the BG and keep gps active when necessary.

sudermatt 01-27-2008 01:44 AM

anybody know of any camera software that will capture the GPS Coordinates in the EXIF data?

now THAT would be very very useful....

Sifter 01-27-2008 01:53 AM

Using iGO software, have Missouri maps loaded on my 512mb card. Performs just as good if not better than my stand alone TomTom One device.

AstronusX 01-27-2008 03:46 AM

my tomtom doesnt detect hps unless init by livesearch, any way to solve this?

idenkilla 01-27-2008 03:59 AM

i READ THE the device has a glitch and it only looks in com1 so u have to have another app open the port so tomm recognizes it

Is Sprint Nav come with SERO plan?

Nunim 01-27-2008 08:40 AM

I can't seem to get I-Go to see my GPS. Google Maps and Sprint Nav works alright, but I-Go won't detect it, neither with automatic detection nor manual. :( I'm limited in my GPS options by a program that breaks it down by state due to my small memory card size.

If you have HTC Camera installed, you can find GPS settings in the registry under:

\HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Image\

String Name: GpsPrefixString
Data: GPS

String Name: GpsSaveFolder_0409
Data: My POI

EXIF Settings can be found under:

\HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Captparam\ExifInfo

Other GPS settings might exist thereabouts.

qwho 01-27-2008 10:26 AM

I tried sprint nav and it said that my user name and password are wrong... I just figured that it was not included in sero. So this is incorrect? Is there some way for me to fix that and use it?

Also has anyone been able to get nav4all working?

I have been using mapopolis. It is a defunct software that is no longer supported. I have the maps for Pennsylvania, and I have to say, it is the best solution so far. When you start it up you can make the settings automatically find your position, and it hides the ppc title bars. Overall very cool, except I can't find the rest of the US maps. The web site says they are out of business basically.

rambrush 01-27-2008 10:45 AM

I also have the message from sprint advising I am not authorized user. So I guess that option is out as I am not paying 10.00 for it.
Google map just tried that and it locates me very well but when driving the map does not follow my location..
So whats option 3?
just say the heck with it and just my seperate gps unit I guess.

Any idea whats these do?

And i use iGuidance...found it the easiest for me to use but the import address from contacts doesnt work that great, but text-to-speech i love

stroths 01-27-2008 10:53 AM

I have always liked MioMap which is identical to iGo My Way 2006. Its very customizable, but it does need 12mb minimum to run so you may have to reboot first.

Hellion 01-27-2008 11:30 AM

Funny thing, I live in San Diego and I tested out just using Google Maps and while driving around up to 15 miles away, city/highway the little blue dot was following along with no problems. Even on the way to work this morning in the rain it worked fine. No glitches or anything. Maybe because I had it hooked up to a power source the whole time? oh well works for me, so I'm happy!

jourabchid 01-27-2008 12:09 PM

I see all this...but how do we make it work....I took a picture with GPS running and I can't find the MyPOI folder anywhere...Should we create a new value in Exif to capture the GPS info?

I honestly don't know because I don't own a Titan (Mogul), sorry. But you may have to enable "stamping" as well. By default, it adds a date and time stamp to the image. But it may also stamp GPS info into the image as well.

Go to:

\HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Image\

DWORD Name: EnableStamp
Data: 1 (hex)

Be sure to check in your camera options as well.

sudermatt 01-27-2008 01:46 PM

I'm wondering if we have to use GPS software to place the current location into My POI folder in some method for the camera to read and place in the EXIF of the picture.
