Can anyone point me towards good software with US maps that stores the maps on the sd card? I only have 1x data from my carrier where I live, so I would rather not have to be constantly downloading portions of maps.

how a about some screen shots?
A blue dot on a top view map kinda sucks, a road view would be nice. I've never used a standalone GPS so a few pics would be nice |
Has anyone got 3rd party Gps app to work without starting google maps first and if so what 3rd party app and what was the work around.
Edit: Thread started on this topic now-http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=17016 |
I've got a great SERO plan for data, but it doesn't include the ridiculous $10/month for navigation. I've also got very good built-in nav systems in my cars (which also use inertial navigation, wheel sensors, and other goodies for keeping track even with no satellite lock) so I really don't want to spend ANY extra. The only thing I'm ever likely to use GPS on my Mogul for is for Windows Live searches, tagging photos with coordinates, and wandering on foot in unfamiliar cities. Maybe on the motorcycle if I can get voice guidance over Bluetooth and some sort of helmet bluetooth solution, but
I think that means that, for my purposes, Google Maps is it for the moment based simply on cost. |

What plan is that? Hell after I get switched to SEO iI may even pay the 10 bucks if it looks good LOL |
Anyone working on a reg change for the TeleNav v5.2 to work with our new intnernal GPS/
Currently, it's set to scan for a Bluetooth gps automatically. I already have a TeleNav account that I'd like to use instead of paying Sprint for their Navigation software (same product really). Thanks, |
Download Schaps Advanced config 2, it has an option to add GPS to the exif data.
Shoot over to xda |
Here's a link to the newest Advanced Config. . Need to be a member of xda to download this link

ehanhan,
Got it...made the setting...I'm missing something...I'm just not seeing any change....and the pictures I am taking are not capturing the GPS in EXIF. I've looked at the camera settings inside the app and can't see anything related to GPS. I've looked at the registry for the HTC camera app and the STAMP key is enabled.... I'm stumped. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? |
I found an active conversation on xda:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...=308688&page=7 haven't been able to get it to work yet |
I think....what we need is the kaiser camera software

It now detects the GPS fine and I don't have to start google maps or live search first to open the com port. |
sprint says: my gps is only for police and fire. to get my gps function to work on this phone i need an external antenna... My pocket laptop(mogul) doesnt have internal gps but the crappy upstage has internal gps WTF.
I would pay someone if they could install that new rom in my phone so i dont need an external antenna... If you know what your doing and live in Minnesota contact me laynpipeallday@msn.com |
According to sprint it is not currently possible to have GPS on your Titan. The ROM that enables this is leaked and not officially out yet. Wait a little bit (tomorrow perhaps) for the official ROM to be released then you can flash it and they will help you out then. Once the official ROM is out flashing it is not hard, you can do it.
|
i just called them today, and they didnt even give a lil hint of a flash...
I cant believe that my miniature laptop they call mogul doesnt come with internal gps but that crappy lil upstage i had does. Horse ****!!!!!!!!! I hope they come out with that soooooon!!!!!!! |
Why would you call? It's unofficial, meaning they don't endorse it or even want it released.
HTC announced this update is coming out, it's just not officially out yet. Please stop trolling. Thanks. |

I have used google maps, live search and sprintnav. One thing I noticed is if I get a phone call while using google maps or live search it says that I need a data connection and the gps then disconnects. This morning I was using sprintnav and on my way to work my friend called and it never disconnected. I drove for about 22 miles and the gps worked perfectly while on the phone using my bluetooth headset. Pretty cool I thought, but again I am not a gps guru so this kind of stuff gets me excited.

I have GMaps, Live Search, TomTom and Navigon 6. I would have to say my favorite is Navigon. Its probably just because I am a graphics whore and it is far and away the most beautiful. The only problem I have with it is the size of the map file, it is close to 2GB for the US and Canada file. I have not found smaller maps for like west coast or anything so I had to stick it on its own memory card since I didnt feel like letting it eat half my 4Gig. It is also a memory hog and you really cannot run anything else concurrently on the mogul.
For me it depends on what I need it for. If I am just looking for the nearest starbucks or something I will use live or Gmaps to get there. If I am using it like a real navi then I will use Navigon. |
Does navigon annouce streets with voice or just iguidance?
|
So far all ive used is google maps. Which worked great for me. Tracked perfectly so im happy.

I love playing with google maps. Its hard for me to really use as a navi cause it doesnt rotate. Maybe i am a retard but i get turned around if i am not heading north on it. :???:
If i am trying to show someone how cool the Mogul is i always show them Live or Google though. I love being able to see the sat map move with the car. Cool as hell. |
personally im not a fan of google maps. Yeah its cool when u wanna show it off but other than that its useless to me. For instance if i need directions somewhere, it will give me the route, and will follow me, but not advance thru the directions unless i tap on the screen and make it go to the next instruction..not useful when youre going into unfamiliar territory.
live search works well with turn by turn directions, WHEN IT WORKS. there have been several instances where Live cant acquire the GPS signal, even if Gmaps is opened first and is locked to a few sats. even though sprints nav software rocks, i refuse to pay those bishes 10 a month for it..how much did i pay for this phone? how much do i pay them every month>?? right. I would like software that has big colorful icons(ease of use), locks onto gps sats fast, and can provide clear turn by turn directions maybe even with voice prompts. I dont wanna pay anything for it either. Sounds kinda stupid, but anyone got any recommendations for me? |

MAPOPOLIS!
I haven't tried it with the new rom yet (going to flash soon), but I've been using this on my Pocket PC with my Bluetooth GPS puck on my dashboard for the last 4 years, and I can honestly say its the most under-rated peice of software out there. Its nothing to look at, its actually rather boring graphically (no fancy 3D views or anything here), however what it DOES do, it does EXTREMELY WELL. That is, it gives clear, concise, turn by turn spoken directions with a text-to-speech function to read you the street names (something this did long before standalone GPS units offered it). Its got dynamic zoom stuff so you can see the details of the upcoming turn when you need it, and then go back to the big picture when you're on the highway, and after trying other applications (tom tom, gmaps, etc), I found that no other application was as good at in-car navigation. Its not the best as far as user-interface (finding a location to route takes some getting used to), and visually some of the others look cooler, but I find that once you've got your location and destination, its one of the best at making sure you stay on the route and get there. EDIT: I forgot to mention that Mapopolis stopped selling their software this past year. However, the application (which is free) is still available for download if you go straight to their download page (the main page at mapopolis.com no longer has links to the software). A google search will give you this: http://www.mapopolis.com/downloadppc...44.52999078068 The maps (which are the parts that cost money) are still available to download if you have an account with them from before they stopped selling them, however demo maps are still available for free to the public (link can be found on the page listed above), and work for 7 days. After that, unfortunately, the only option is to hack them to work since they are no longer selling the full version (very easy to crack- maps have a single bit to determine demo status. If you change that bit to 0 in a hex editor, the map becomes non-demo/full version. Look it up for further instructions). I actually find it very sad that they are no longer selling the software, since I haven't found any other good ones that speak street names. Let me know if I'm overlooking one, please! |

umm i know that. it centers on gps, thats not the problem. the problem is when i need directions and on the screen, it says "turn right in 1.3 miles" and i make the turn, google maps shows that i have turned and will still follow me, but will not go to the next direction, UNLESS i tap on the screen in the directions bubble, which is dumb, because if i dont know where im at then what the hell is the point of this?
windows live works as it should once it finally gets locked on, and will tell me "turn right in 1.3 miles", and will recognize my turn and update the next direction automatically. thats what i mean |
External GPS Settings Screen
Since I updated, I was playing with all of the settings unable to get the GPS to work with GMaps, LiveSearch, or Sprint Nav. Can someone please let me know exactly what settings they have for each of these programs and also what settings in the Windows -> Settings -> System -> External GPS -> Programs, Hardware, and Access?
I looked through 50 pages of the other thread and couldn't find all of the settings. Thanks. |

Does Garmin not have a PPC-compatible version of its software? Heck, I had Garmin on a Motot RAZR several years back that worked great. Seems odd that they wouldn't have a PPC version available?
|
i am a fan of mio map. :) the hacked version requires no install or serial. Just drop on the SD card with maps and voices
