Best GPS software to use with our new feature?

I just used iGuidance on a 2 hour trip. On the way there I used the internal GPS and it was poor at best. It wouldn't refresh unless I tapped the screen and even then it was jumpy and wouldn't move while I was driving. Sounds like an issue with iGuidance. I've been playing with google maps, miomaps, and iGo at the moment, and all of them update no problem.

However, I am looking into what Google Maps does to make the gps work. I'm guessing something API related with the intermediate driver. I should then be able to whip up a program to run in the BG and keep gps active when necessary.
