Issues with 1X

I just moved to rural Iowa from Chicago and when my phone switches from EVDO to the 1X I get issues. It seems whenever it tries to retrieve internet data over 1X my phone will lock up and I will need to soft reset. Any ideas how to fix/prevent this? I am using DCD clean rom.

try flashing the 1.40 radio, i had it so bad that i couldnt even start the device up
