Custom Cofiguration on hard reset..?

what does this option do? I am coming to this device from an Omnia so this is my fist time back on an HTC since the old xv6700. Is there a drawback or benefit to doing this?

I've loaded both the "factory default" and the "custom configuration" and as far as I can tell, they are identical. I was really hoping one would be a plain vanilla HTC ROM, with the other being the crapware-loaded Verizon version, but no luck there.
