looks like some are having trouble with the patched radio for sprint but we don't have to worry about that.

Yep was just talking to her in chat and did some memory dumps for her. The radio blocks ram writing spl just like on TP2 but she said she is "used to the challenge". She is working on it and I'm fully sure she will get it done.

For someone who is new to this, could someone give a brief run-down of the beenfits we'll receive from a custom ROM?

Personally, I don't need any UI tweaking or customizing (I think I'll be sticking with Mobile Shell and my own silly customizations there), but I just want to have a realistic expectation of what will come if/when the Imagio is opened up.

The sorts of things I'd be looking for would be:
- Optimized version of WM with bloaty junk stripped out (not unlike nlite or vlite for XP or Vista)
- Speed optimizations (better drivers? Maybe would just naturally come with the point above?)
- Newer builds of Windows Mobile than the stock ROM or even than what HTC or Verizon are giving us access to.

From what I've read, all of those seem to be what comes with the unlock, but I just wanted to be sure. Is there a place setup to contribute funds to the Imagio's effort?

I cant wait to put the manila 2.5 look on the Imagio, I believe this cant be done currently.

Yes those are exactly some of the things you will find with custom ROMs and of course various degrees of other customizations like Manila 2.5 (Newer TouchFLO like on the LEO for example) themes, preloaded apps that matter, removal of apps no one wants, etc.
