Lock Screen notifications

On the Imagio, it was my understanding that whenever the phone is locked and you have a missed call or text message, you can tap on the lock symbol and it will bring up another icon for the missed call or message that you can slide to view the missed info without having to unlock the phone.
However... On my phone, if it is locked and I get a text message, it show the message for a split second, then shows the lock screen with the missed indicator on the lock symbol for a split second, then just goes back to the normal lock symbol. I have no time to actually tap on the lock symbol to see the new icon so that I can slide it over to see the missed message. Does anyone have any idea why this would be?

Also theres no calender appointments either?
