what's up with this extreme word correction??

What options control the spell correction features? My WM6.1 used to suggest endings for words that I type, but this thing is actually changing the whole word (letters I've already typed) into what it thinks I mean, which is very annoying. I don't mind it suggesting endings, but I can't have it change letters I already put in. What's the way to disable this?
