Your phone's volume was probably set to off. I get that message sometimes when I'm at work (where I keep my volume off) then get a VVM. I simply turn the volume back up and listen to my message. As for uninstalling some programs it's not quite that easy to do via the Remove Programs section since most of what comes on your phone is baked into the stock ROM which is why you're able to do a hard reset and have everything back to default without the need to reinstall the basic programs/settings that came with the phone.
