How to place emergency call when locked

I can't find a description of how to place an emergency call without unlocking the phone. There is a note that emergency calls can be made, but how? I'm thinking I use the PIN entry pad to enter 911 - then unlock? But I don't really want to test this out...for obvious reasons.

Yes, that's the right way. Just try to type 911 on the pin pad and the unlock button becomes "call" and "end call" buttons. It is safe as long as you don't start the call.
