Usually this means, and I hate to say it because you said you did it already, that you need to format the SD card. Everyone I have worked with has had a positive result after formatting the sd when they get stuck on HTC bootup screen.

Ok, well it could be defective or you may need to try the other route. Have you tried the route of using the cmd prompts?

I have tried the command prompt method without any luck. I get stuck when I try to flash the recovery image.

I'm using the command prompt method (and I formatted my sd card just before doing this) and it seems to work but then i get the phone with exclamation point. I don't know where i went wrong!

That means it did not flash correctly. You need to format, then re-push to the sd card, make sure it goes, if it does it will give you a time. Then you can flash it with the flash command, if done correctly it will repeat the command you typed and you can boot into recovery.
