Well I did the rooting and everything went smooth...
Pretty easy with the videos posted on this site...
Also ran picme like suggested by someone on here and that how I knew I was rooted...Thanks to everyone on here.
I came from WM also and thought it was gonna be a difficult and long process but it was bout 30 mins after downloading everything...
Now time to install and run a custom ROM...

Re: Rooting

Hi All-

I have been tring to get my Sprint Hero rooted for the past week without success.

I have tried the command prompt way...I get to the:
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
command and it reads: file not found

Everything prior to that works fine. Any thoughts?

I have tried the Flashrec methood and all is fine until it is time to get to recover mode. I get the white screen unstead of the black screen. I have tried to boot using - volume down and power - and the phone hangs on the HTC logo start up.

I have jailbroken/unlocked IPhones and flashed custom ROMs on my old HTC Touch Diamond.

For the life of me I cannot get this phone rooted!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Scott

Sticking on the HTC Screen means you need to backup and format the SD card.

Then push the recovery image to storage card again

Than flash it again with CMD

So you are basically starting over after you format the SD Card

Yea, I found the other way to be pretty easy after I got the drivers done. I like the way you posted, but I am used to the other one haha. I might link your 10 steps you had somewhere with that video on my tips thread when I get a chance. You put it somewhere, neway it was a good one. Put that in your sig.

The rom flash is trickier than expected. You will need to actually go into the sd card for this. So...

Make sure you have the recovery image and it is in AndroidSDK\Tools

Type exit until you get to the C:\AndroidSDK\Tools>_

Type this exactly: adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.1.img /sdcard/

Once that is finished it will say something like it did it and tell you it took 1 to 5 seconds.

Now it will be back to C:\AndroidSDK\Tools>_

Type adb shell

will get $ so type cd /sdcard/

will have $ again, type su

will have # so type this exactly flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.1.img

You know to press enter after every one I listed, this will repeat recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.1.img if it worked if you get out of memory, reset phone and box and repeat the steps exactly.

When you think it worked: Power down phone. Power up holding volume down and End key. If you are rooted you will get a white screen with 3 options. One of those options is to press home for recovery, press it and you will either get the htc screen w green words or you will get a phone with an exclamation point. The ! is a sign that you don't have a recovery image installed correctly. The words is a great sign, continue with back up from nandroid. Oh and don't partition your sd card until you have backed it up!!

Last thing, I can't encourage backing up with Nandroid enough!! I've already used it 5 times!!

Edited to include 1.5.1 which was brought over by Bradart in this thread So make sure to go by and thank him too.

thacounty, i have a question for you.

right after i type in adb shell, i get # right after it. i don't get $. what do i do?

c:\adnroidsdk\tools>adb shell
# cd /sdcard/
cd /sdcard/
# su
su
# flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.1.img
flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.1.img
error opening recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.1.img: No such file or directory.

You would but you have SU all the time. If you didn't have SU it would be a $.

Did you push it first?
