Basically, the stock sms keeps the cpu running after use. Since the phone doesn't go into sleep mode, the battery runs out much quicker. The temporary fix is to use a 3rd-party sms app.

Your phone's cpu never sleeps once you open messages. So in turn your battery is eaten quite fast and in the long run your phone is gonna just "sh4t" the bed sooner than it should.

In order to stop this you need to install a 3rd party sms app such as Handcent and turn off the messaging notifications in the default app.

tj.iscool, just check your up time. If you have used the messaging app, you should see a high percentage of awake time

From home screen
hit menu
settings
about phone
status
see up time and awake time

You want the awake time to be less than 100%. The lower the percentage, the more time the phone has been in sleep mode.

I use Handcent & leave the stock messaging notifications on. I don't have the 100% awake time by doing this.

i always have 100% awake time. i also have handcent on my phone....what am i doing wrong?

i did that, but when i open messages, it opens up handcents program instead of the default one.

i realize this, but i had to change the setting in the default one to make it not run anymore. so to fix this i uninstalled handcents app, went to the default one, made the changes, reinstalled hancent, restart my phone, and now all seems to be going good :-p
